Revised versions of our published pob-TZVP [Peintinger, M. F.; Oliveira, D. V. and Bredow, T., J. Comput. Chem., 2013, 34 (6), 451-459.] and unpublished pob-DZVP basis sets, denoted as pob-TZVP-rev2 and pob-DZVP-rev2, have been derived for the elements HBr. It was observed that the pob basis sets suffer from the basis set superposition error (BSSE). In order to reduce this effect, we took into account the counterpoise energy of hydride dimers as an additional parameter in the basis set optimization. The overall performance, portability, and SCF stability of the resulting rev2 basis sets are significantly improved compared to the original pob basis sets. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Single crystals of optical quality of L-arginine HCl · H2O and L-arginine HBr · H2O with dimensions up to 80 × 60 × 30 mm have been grown from aqueous solutions by controlled evaporation at about 310 K The isotypic crystals exhibit a quite similar behaviour with respect to morphological, pyroelectric, dielectric, optical, thermal expansion, electrostrictive, electrooptic, elastic, thermoelastic and non-linear optical properties A distinct anisotropy of the longitudinal elastic stiffness is observed with a maximum along the direction of the alignment of the arginine ions Nearly in the same direction a minimum of thermal expansion, dielectric constant and index of refraction is found The pyroelectric, electrostrictive, electrooptic and non-linear-optical effects are of only mediocre magnitude except the electrostrictive constant d211 which surmounts the longitudinal electrostrictive constant d111 of alpha-quartz by a factor three

Directional solidification of the LiF-LiBaF3 eutectic

Das Mineral Fresnoit wurde 1960 im Sanbornit-Quarz-Gestein und im Quarzit von Fresno (Kalifornien) entdeckt [1] (Korngrrge < 1 mm). Es kristallisiert [2] in der Raumgruppe P4bm-CZ4v mit a = 8,250, c= 5,210 A und besitzt demnach kein Symmetriezentrum. In der Struktur liegen Si207Ketten und eine ungewrhnliche Ti-Koordination, [TiO s], vor. Auf Grund der Struktur lfigt das Mineral interessante physikalische Eigenschaften, besonders piezoelektrische und optische, erwarten. Zur Synthese und Ziichtung des Fresnoit (sowie der entsprechenden GermaniumVerbindung) dienten als Ausgangsmaterialien Carbonate und Oxide des Reinheitsgrades Puratronic, Johnson-Matthey. Zur Darstellung der Verbindung wurden st6chiometrische Mengen der Ausgangsmaterialien in mehreren Schritten 2 4 Tage bei 980 und 1260 ~ gesintert und zwischendurch homogenisiert (Reaktionskontrolle mittels Rrntgenaufnahmen). DTA-Untersuchungen der synthetisierten Verbindung ergaben, dab bei 1445_+ 5 ~ ein kongruenter Schmelzpunkt und zwischen 20 und 1445~ keine Phasentransformationen vorliegen. Die Ztichtung wurde nach dem Czoctiralski-Verfahren mit einer HochfrequenzKristallziehanlage in PtRh20-Tiegeln an Luft durchgefiihrt. Da zunfichst keine Impfkristalle zur Verftigung standen, wurde bei den ersten Zfichtungen mit einem Pt-Stab ( ~ 2 m m ) geimpft und durch Dtinnhalsziehen eine doppelte Keimauslese durchgeftihrt. Ffir die weiteren Ztichtungen wurden orientierte Impfkristalle verwendet (Ziehrichtung [001]). Zur Verringerung des Temperaturgradienten oberhalb der Schmelze diente ein zylindrischer Strahlungsreflektor (passiver Nacherhitzer). Weitere Zuchtparameter: Ziehgeschwindigkeit 0,6 ram/h; Rotationsgeschwindigkeit Kristall 7 0 80 U/min, Zuchttiegel 2 U/rain (in Gegenrichtung zur Kristalldrehung); Abktihlungsgeschwindigkeit ca. 30 ~ Die Zfichtungen erwiesen sich als schwierig, da einmal die PtTiegel angegriffen und Platin-Partikel in die Kristalle eingebaut mlrden, zum anderen die Schmelze zum Wachstum stark unterkfihlt werden mugte, wobei die ViskositS.t stieg. Es wurden erstmals Kristalle der Grrl3e 20 x 60 mm gezfichtet (Fig. 1). Sie waren gelblich bis farblos und klar durchsichtig. Trotz des Strahlungsreflek-
