In this paper, we present a non-electric quench detection method based on the strain gauge measurement of a superconducting solenoid magnet at cryogenic temperature under an intense magnetic field. Unlike the traditional voltage measurement of quench detection, the strain-based detection method utilizes low-temperature strain gauges, which evidently reduce electromagnetic noise and breakdown, to measure the magneto/thermo-mechanical behavior of the superconducting magnet during excitation. The magnet excitation, quench tests and trainings were performed on a prototype 5 T superconducting solenoid magnet. The transient strains and their abrupt changes were compared with the current, magnetic field and temperature signals collected during excitation and quench tests to indicate that the strain gauge measurements can detect the quench feature of the superconducting magnet. The proposed method is expected to be able to detect the quench of a superconducting coil independently or utilized together with other electrical methods. In addition, the axial quench propagation velocity of the solenoid is evaluated by the quench time lags among different localized strains. The propagation velocity is enhanced after repeated quench trainings.

Strain-based quench detection for a solenoid superconducting magnet

Detecting local heat-dissipating zones in high-temperature superconductor (HTS) magnets is a challenging task due to slow propagation of such zones in HTS conductors. For long conductor lengths, voltage-based methods may not provide a sufficient sensitivity or redundancy, and therefore nonvoltage-based detection alternatives are being sought. One of those is the recently proposed method of Eigen Frequency Thermometry (EFT), which is an active acoustic technique for a fast and nonintrusive detection of “hot spots,” utilizing temperature dependence of the conductor elastic moduli. In this work, we demonstrate the efficiency of EFT for detecting localized heating in a 1.2-m-long sample of REBCO tape immersed in liquid nitrogen, and benchmark sensitivity of the acoustic detection with respect to voltage, hot spot temperature, and power dissipation in the conductor. Modifying the original technique for differential mode of operation enables a much improved sensitivity, and adds a hot spot localization capability. Furthermore, we adapt this technique to subscale coils wound with REBCO CORC conductor built in the framework of U.S. Magnet Development Program. A successful thermal-based detection of dissipation onset at the critical current for a two-layer canted CORC dipole assembly is discussed.

Quench Detection for High-Temperature Superconductor Conductors Using Acoustic Thermometry

Quench detection capability is essential for reliable operation and protection of superconducting magnets, coils, cables, and machinery. We propose a quench detection technique based on sensing local temperature variations in the bulk of a superconducting winding by monitoring its transient acoustic response. Our approach is primarily aimed at coils and devices built with high-temperature superconductor materials where quench detection using standard voltage-based techniques may be inefficient due to the slow velocity of quench propagation. The acoustic sensing technique is non-invasive, fast, and capable of detecting temperature variations of less than 1 K in the interior of the superconductor cable stack in a 77 K cryogenic environment. We show results of finite element modeling and experiments conducted on a model superconductor stack demonstrating viability of the technique for practical quench detection, discuss sensitivity limits of the technique, and its various applications.

Acoustic thermometry for detecting quenches in superconducting coils and conductor stacks

High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are being increasingly used for magnet applications. One of the known challenges of practical conductors made with high-temperature superconductor materials is a slow normal zone propagation velocity resulting from a large superconducting temperature margin in combination with a higher heat capacity compared to conventional low-temperature superconductors (LTS). As a result, traditional voltage-based quench detection schemes may be ineffective for detecting normal zone formation in superconducting accelerator magnet windings. A developing hot spot may reach high temperatures and destroy the conductor before a practically measurable resistive voltage is detected. The present paper discusses various approaches to mitigating this problem, specifically focusing on recently developed non-voltage techniques for quench detection.

Quench Detection and Protection for High-Temperature Superconductor Accelerator Magnets

Quench detection method without a central voltage tap by calculating active power

An ultrasonic quench-detection method for superconducting magnets is presented. This nondestructive method monitors the change of the acoustic transfer function of a superconducting magnet induced by a local temperature rise or an epoxy crack. Experiments were carried out on a small epoxy-impregnated magnet. The experimental results show that a local temperature rise of about 2-3 K can be detected by this method. It is concluded that the technique can provide early quench warning by monitoring continuously the change of the acoustic transfer function of the magnet. >
