The strain energy densities for various crystalline planes of LiCoO2 were calculated from the stiffness tensors obtained from lattice model calculations using the program GULP. In addition to Coulomb and Buckingham potentials, it was necessary to include shell models for the oxygen and cobalt ions in order to obtain acceptable agreement between the observed and calculated structural parameters and high frequency dielectric constant. The strain energy densities u due to differential thermal expansion were calculated using the theoretical stiffness tensors and estimated values for the thermal expansion coefficients of LiCoO2. For a temperature change of 675 °C, these ranged from 0.5 to 1.3×108 erg/cm3 or 5 to 13 J/m2 for 1-μm-thick films on alumina substrates. In particular, the energies for the (003), (101), and (104) planes were ordered as u(003)≫u(104)>u(101). This suggests that the strong (101) preferred orientation of LiCoO2 films (⩾1 μm thick) is due to the tendency to minimize volume strain energy that arises from differential thermal expansion between the film and the substrate. Additional properties obtained from the GULP calculations include the free energy, heat capacity, and the k=0 vibrational modes.

Dielectric constant (K), loss (tan δ), and conductivity (σ) of single crystals of Al2O3, Al2O3: Cr (0.03 and 2 mol%) and Al2O3:V (2 mol%) have been measured as a function of frequency in the range 102 to 107 Hz and at temperatures between 30 and 450 °C, (where the electric field is always perpendicular to the optic axis). The K value of Al2O3, at 30 °C is 9.4 and frequency-independent. Doping by chromium or vanadium produces no detectable change in the K value of Al2O3. The dielectric loss of all these samples at 30 °C is below detection level (tan δ < 0.0005) throughout this frequency region. In these crystals, the dielectric constant increases with temperature exhibiting a frequency dependence from about 200 °C; the changes in K with temperature being larger at lower frequencies (similar behaviour is exhibited by the dielectric loss). This behaviour of K is attributed to space charge polarisation due to crystal defects. The plots of log σ vs. 1/T at different frequencies for these crystals do not coincide indicating the conduction in this temperature region is due to impurities. The activation energies for conduction — in the high temperature region — are calculated to be 0.77, 0.69, 0.64, and 0.62 eV respectively for the above mentioned solids. The lower activation energy values for conduction in doped crystals may be attributed to a larger charge carrier concentration in them (compared to Al2O3).

Der dielektrische Verlustfaktor aller untersuchten Proben bei 30 °C liegt unterhalb der Nachweisgrenze (tan δ < 0,0005) im angegebenen Frequenzbereich. In diesen Kristallen nimmt die Dielektrizitatskonstante mit der Temperatur zu und zeigt von etwa 200 °C an eine Frequenzabhangigkeit, wobei die anderungen von K mit der Temperatur bei niedrigen Frequenzen groser sind (ein ahnliches Verhalten zeigt der Verlustfaktor). Dieses Verhalten von K wird der Raumladungspolarisation durch Kristalldefekte zugeschrieben. Die Kurven von log σ uber 1/T bei verschiedenen Frequenzen fallen fur diese Kristalle nicht zusammen und zeigen, das die Leitfahigkeit in diesem Temperaturbereich durch Storstellen verursacht wird. Die Aktivierungsenergien der Leitfahigkeit werden — im Hochtemperaturbereich — zu 0,77, 0,69, 0,64 bzw. 0,62 eV berechnet, fur die oben angegebenen Substanzen. Die niedrigen Werte fur die Aktivierungsenergien der Leitfahigkeit in dotierten Kristallen lassen sich mit einer groseren Ladungstragerkonzentration (im Vergleich zu Al2O3) erklaren.

Dielectric Properties of Single Crystals of Al2O3 and Al2O3 Doped with Chromium or Vanadium

A self-forming diffusion barrier (SFB) layer was formed at Cu–Mn/SiO2 interface. Spatial variation of the chemical composition and valence state of the elements in the SFB was investigated in a subnanometer resolution using electron energy loss spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The SFB was found to have a layered structure with graded compositions of nanocrystalline MnO and amorphous MnSiO3. The valence state of Mn was found to be +2 in the MnO layer and gradually increased to +3 in the MnSiO3 layer. The reported dielectric constant of the SFB could be explained by the observed composition and microstructure.

Dielectric constant of MgAl2O4 spinel and the oxide additivity rule

Dielectric constant (K′), loss (K″), and conductivity (σ) of single crystals of MnO and solid solutions of MnO/CoO and MnO/NiO have been measured as a function of frequency in the range 102 to 107 Hz and at temperatures between 30 and 450 °C. The value for K′ of MnO at 30 °C is 18.1 and practically frequency-independent. In the solid solutions of MnO/CoO and MnO/NiO (50:50 composition) K′ decreases with frequency to a frequency-independent value of 16.4 and 14.4, respectively. The K″-values of the solid solutions are much larger at lower frequencies (compared to MnO). The larger values of K′ and K″ for the solid solutions at low frequencies are due to the space charge polarization. In all crystals, the dielectric constant increases with temperature but decreases with frequency. The dependence of the high-temperature dielectric constant on frequency is attributed to the creation and destruction of dipoles at such temperatures. log ΔK′ vs. 1/T plots (where ΔK′ is the difference between dielectric constant values at any temperature T and room temperature) are straight lines for these compounds giving activation energy values of 0.57, 0.41, and 0.35 eV for MnO, MnO/CoO, and MnO/NiO, respectively. The plots of log σ vs. 1/T also give straight lines for all the crystals studied, and one obtains activation energies of 0.6, 0.52, and 0.52 eV, respectively, for the above mentioned compounds. The proximity of these activation energy values for the two processes suggest that the same charge carriers are responsible for changes in K′ and K″. The lower activation energy for the solid solutions is attributed to lattice distortion. In solid solutions, the room temperature conductivity exhibits a maximum — and the activation energy for conduction a minimum — near the composition Mn0.9X0.1O (where X stands for Co or Ni) which is explained as being due to scattering of charge carriers at larger concentrations than 10% for X.



Die komplexe Dielektrizitatskonstante (K′ und K″) und die Leitfahigkeit (σ) wurden an MnO-Einkristallen und an MnO/CoO- und MnO/NiO-Mischkristallen als Funktion der Frequenz in Bereich von 102 bis 107 Hz bei Temperaturen von 30 bis 450 °C gemessen. Der Wert fur K′ betragt fur MnO bei 30 °C 18,1 und ist praktisch frequenzunabhangig. In den Mischkristallen MnO/CoO und MnC/NiO (Zusammensetzung 50:50) nimmt K′ mit der Frequenz auf einen frequenzunabhangigen Wert von 16,4 bzw. 14,4 ab. Im Vergleich zu MnO sind die K″-Werte der Mischkristalle bei niedrigen Temperaturen viel groser. Die groseren Werte von K′ und K″ fur die Mischkristalle bei niedrigen Frequenzen werden durch eine Raumladungspolarisation hervorgerufen. In allen Kristallen steigt die Dielektrizitatskonstante mit der Temperatur an, fallt jedoch mit der Frequenz ab. Die Abhangigkeit der Dielektrizitatskonstante von der Frequenz wird der Erzeugung und Vernichtung von Dipolen bei solchen Temperaturen zugeschrieben. log ΔK′ uber 1/T-Kurven (wobei ΔK′ die Differenz der Dielektrizitatskonstanten bei der Temperatur T und Zimmertemperatur ist) sind fur diese Verbindungen Geraden und ergeben Aktivierungsenergien von 0,57, 0,41 und 0,35 eV fur MnO, MnO/CoO bzw. MnO/NiO. Die Kurven von log σ uber 1/T ergeben ebenfalls Geraden fur alle untersuchten Kristalle, und man erhalt Aktivierungsenergien von 0,6, 0,52 bzw. 0,52 eV fur die oben erwahnten Verbindungen. Die Ubereinstimmung dieser Aktivierungsenergien fur die beiden Prozesse weist darauf hin, das dieselben Ladungstrager fur die Anderungen von K′ und K″ verantwortlich sind. Die niedrigere Aktivierungsenergie fur die Mischkristalle wird Gitterstorungen zugeschrieben. Bei den Mischkristallen zeigt die Leitfahigkeit bei Zimmertemperatur ein Maximum — die Aktivierungsenergie fur die Leitfahigkeit ein Minimum — in der Nahe der Zusammensetzung Mn0.9X0.1O (wobei X fur Co oder Ni steht), was durch Streuung der Ladungstrager bei hoheren Konzentrationen als 10% fur X erklart wird.

F‐Band Absorption and Thermoluminescence of KBr Single Crystals X‐Ray Irradiated under High AC Fields

Optical absorption is measured in the F-band region of NaCl and KCl single crystals X-ray irradiated under de fields and also later subjected to a magnetic field perpendicular to the (100) faces. The presence of de fields during irradiation seems to produce an absorption band overlapping the F-band on the long wavelength side. The magnetic field tends to resolve this band from the F-band of these crystals. An attempt is made to understand these results.



Es wird die optische Absorption im Bereich der F-Bande von NaCl- und KCl-Einkristallen gemessen, die unter Gleichspannung rontgenbestrahlt und spater einem Magnetfeld senkrecht zu den (100)-Flachen ausgesetzt wird. Die Anwesenheit von Gleichspannungsfeldern wahrend der Bestrahlung scheint eine Absorptionsbande hervorzurufen, die die F-Bande an der langwelligen Seite uberlappt. Das Magnetfeld tendiert dazu, diese Bande von der F-Bande dieser Kristalle zu trennen. Ein Versuch wird gemacht, diese Ergebnisse zu verstehen.
