Protein- and peptide-directed syntheses of inorganic materials.

This review summarizes traditional and recent nonconventional, bioinspired, methods for the aqueous synthesis of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The basic chemistry concepts are critically emphasized at the very beginning as these are strongly correlated with the selection of ligands and the optimal formation of aqueous QDs and their more sophisticated structures. The synergies of biomimetic and biosynthetic methods that can combine biospecific reactivity with the robust and strong optical responses of QDs have also resulted in new approaches to the synthesis of the nanoparticles themselves. A related new avenue is the recent extension of QD synthesis to form nanoparticles endowed with chiral optical properties. Aqueous Based Semiconductor Nanocrystals

As nanoparticle syntheses in aqueous and organic systems have their own merits and drawbacks, specific applications may call for the transfer of newly formed nanoparticles from a polar to a non-polar environment (or vice versa) after synthesis. This critical review focuses on the application of phase transfer in nanoparticle synthesis, and features core–shell structures in bimetallic nanoparticles, replacement reactions in organic media, and catalytic properties of various nanostructures. It also describes the reversible organic and aqueous phase transfer of semiconductor and metallic nanoparticles for biological applications, and the use of phase transfer in depositing noble metals on semiconductor nanoparticles (258 references).

Phase transfer and its applications in nanotechnology

BACKGROUND Nanomaterials are considered to be the pre-eminent component of the rapidly advancing field of nanotechnology. However, developments in the biologically inspired synthesis of nanoparticles are still in their infancy and consequently attracting the attention of material scientists throughout the world. Keeping in mind the fact that microorganism-assisted synthesis of nanoparticles is a safe and economically viable prospect, in the current study we report Candida albicans-mediated biological synthesis of gold nanoparticles. METHODS AND RESULTS Transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and various spectrophotometric analyses were performed to characterize the gold nanoparticles. The morphology of the synthesized gold particles depended on the abundance of C. albicans cytosolic extract. Transmission electron microscopy, nanophox particle analysis, and atomic force microscopy revealed the size of spherical gold nanoparticles to be in the range of 20-40 nm and nonspherical gold particles were found to be 60-80 nm. We also evaluated the potential of biogenic gold nanoparticles to probe liver cancer cells by conjugating them with liver cancer cell surface-specific antibodies. The antibody-conjugated gold particles were found to bind specifically to the surface antigens of the cancer cells. CONCLUSION The antibody-conjugated gold particles synthesized in this study could successfully differentiate normal cell populations from cancerous cells.

Fungus-mediated biological synthesis of gold nanoparticles: potential in detection of liver cancer.

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) conjugated with biomolecules are promising building blocks for assembly into nanostructured functional materials for developing biomarker platforms because of their size dependent optical and electrical properties. Biocompatible GNPs were synthesized using glutamic acid as a reducing agent and the interaction between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and GNPs was investigated using fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies. The binding constant (Kb) of protein (BSA) to GNPs was determined by measuring the quenching of the fluorescence intensity of tryptophan residues of the protein molecules after conjugation. The conformational change in BSA at its native form after conjugation with GNPs confirmed that protein undergoes a more flexible conformational state on the boundary surface of GNPs after bioconjugation. Interaction of gold nanoparticles with protein: A spectroscopic study to monitor protein conformational changes

Highly ordered silver sulfide nanorods conjugated with the Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) protein have been successfully achieved at ambient temperature. Such a process is very simple and controllable, directly using silver nitrate and thioacetamide (TAA) as the reactants in the aqueous solution of BSA. The products have been characterized by XRD, HRTEM-SAED, SEM-EDS, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and CD spectroscopy. The results of the research show that the as-prepared Ag2S nanorods are monodispersed with sizes about 40 nm in diameter and 220 nm in length, and exhibit a high degree of crystallinity and good photoluminescence. Furthermore, an interesting mechanism is discussed for the formation of the Ag2S nanorods.
