This research study explores the Global Positioning System (GPS), its history, and the process of discovery needed to create the most accurate GPS possible, as well as the contemporary applications of GPS technology. Starting with the first satellite in space, GPS has been a work in progress. Originally pursued by the military for improvements to military tactics, GPS has become integrated into the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. How GPS determines location is a dichotomy, with simplistic theory and complex application. Many factors go into GPS to provide a consistent, accurate location. The orbital planes the satellites are placed in provide 24/7 coverage globally, the L-band frequencies used were chosen specifically for the characteristics they possess, and the multiple atomic clocks installed on each satellite provide incredible accuracy down to the nanoseconds, which is quintessential in GPS accuracy. The applications in GPS are far reaching and more applications are continually being discovered. With as far as GPS technology has progressed, there are still several factors that degrade the signal and are a challenge to overcome. Many of these challenges can be corrected efficiently, however, others, such as scintillation and total electron content variability in the ionosphere, create major hurdles to overcome. Luckily, there are many programs that aid in the correction process of these hurdles. The History of GPS According to R. Saunders’ article ​A Short History of GPS Development,​ The Global Positioning System (GPS) has a long history of trial and error and refinement and improvement. It’s purpose has shifted from being a military strategic asset to commonplace among the general public with its use in traveling, farming, and even banking. The beginning of GPS, introduced with a simple idea, can be traced back to the Soviet Union in the late 1950’s. In 1957, the Soviet Union made history with successfully launching the first satellite in space. To track the satellite Sputnik, Physicists and Scientists at John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory listened to the beeps Sputnik’s signals produced. They noticed that the beeps had a Doppler Effect or Doppler Shift as the satellite passed by. Much like the sound a siren makes as a fire truck approaches, then as it passes, the sound of the siren seems different. The change in timing between the beeps let the scientist know Sputnik’s location. This led to the idea of reversing that process, to give a location on the Earth. Using radio frequencies to determine location in a two dimensional plane had been around since WWII, but using satellites would push this technology into the three dimensional realm. The United States Navy, Army, and Air Force all began developing their own GPS satellites in the 1960’s, but this was no small task. The Empirical CODE Orbit Model (ECOM) of the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), which was developed in the early 1990s, is widely used in the International GNSS Service (IGS) community. For a rather long time, spurious spectral lines are known to exist in geophysical parameters, in particular in the Earth Rotation Parameters (ERPs) and in the estimated geocenter coordinates, which could recently be attributed to the ECOM. These effects grew creepingly with the increasing influence of the GLONASS system in recent years in the CODE analysis, which is based on a rigorous combination of GPS and GLONASS since May 2003. In a first step we show that the problems associated with the ECOM are to the largest extent caused by the GLONASS, which was reaching full deployment by the end of 2011. GPS-only, GLONASS-only, and combined GPS/GLONASS solutions using the observations in the years 2009–2011 of a global network of 92 combined GPS/GLONASS receivers were analyzed for this purpose. In a second step we review direct solar radiation pressure (SRP) models for GNSS satellites. We demonstrate that only even-order short-period harmonic perturbations acting along the direction Sun-satellite occur for GPS and GLONASS satellites, and only odd-order perturbations acting along the direction perpendicular to both, the vector Sun-satellite and the spacecraft’s solar panel axis. Based on this insight we assess in the third step the performance of four candidate orbit models for the future ECOM. The geocenter coordinates, the ERP differences w. r. t. the IERS 08 C04 series of ERPs, the misclosures for the midnight epochs of the daily orbital arcs, and scale parameters of Helmert transformations for station coordinates serve as quality criteria. The old and updated ECOM are validated in addition with satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations and by comparing the orbits to those of the IGS and other analysis centers. Based on all tests, we present a new extended ECOM which substantially reduces the spurious signals in the geocenter coordinate $$z$$
 (by about a factor of 2–6), reduces the orbit misclosures at the day boundaries by about 10 %, slightly improves the consistency of the estimated ERPs with those of the IERS 08 C04 Earth rotation series, and substantially reduces the systematics in the SLR validation of the GNSS orbits.

In 2017, the new generation satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) test-bed was initiated by Australia and New Zealand, which supports the dual-frequency multi-constellation (DFMC) positioning with both GPS and Galileo signals. This new SBAS DFMC service allows the elimination of the first-order term of the ionospheric delays, and extends the service area to the entire footprint of the geostationary satellite. In addition to the satellite clock and orbital corrections, the integrity information is also broadcast by the SBAS satellite to users, so that protection levels can be computed to bound the positioning errors with a pre-defined probability of hazardous misleading information. Different from the aeronautical applications, the ground-based applications for road transport may suffer from new problems in different measurement environments, e.g. complicated multipath behaviours and frequent filter re-initialisations during positioning in urban areas. A new weighting model allowing different impacts of the elevation angles, the signal-to-noise-ratios and the smoothing time after re-initialisations is proposed and compared with the traditional elevation-dependent weighting model. The model is applied to the carrier-smoothed code measurements in different environments, i.e., the open-sky scenario, the suburban scenario and the urban scenario. It is found that the new weighting model effectively de-weights the large residuals in the suburban and the urban scenarios, where the mean values and the standard deviations of the overbounding excess-mass cumulative density function can be significantly reduced for the combined weighted noise and multipath. Using 1 Hz GNSS observations measured in these three measurement environments, the horizontal positioning errors (HPEs) and the horizontal protection levels (HPLs) are computed for different filter smoothing windows. Applying the new weighting model, significant reduction can be observed in the mean HPLs in the suburban and urban scenarios. Among them, the reduction in the HPLs have reached about 35–40% in the suburban scenario. The mean absolute HPEs are also reduced by about 10% in the urban scenario. However, when under the open-sky scenario, the traditional elevation-dependent weighting model is sufficient for the positioning and integrity monitoring using the SBAS DFMC service.
