Applications of artificial neural networks for thermal analysis of heat exchangers – A review

In this paper, after a short review of waste heat recovery technologies from diesel engines, the heat exchangers (HEXs) used in exhaust of engines is introduced as the most common way. So, a short review of the technologies that increase the heat transfer in HEXs is introduced and the availability of using them in the exhaust of engines is evaluated and finally a complete review of different HEXs which previously were designed for increasing the exhaust waste heat recovery is presented. Also, future view points for next HEXs designs are proposed to increase heat recovery from the exhaust of diesel engines.

A review of different heat exchangers designs for increasing the diesel exhaust waste heat recovery

This is the property of earth that at a depth of about 1.5 to 2 m, the temperature of ground remains almost constant throughout the year. This constant temperature is called earth’s undisturbed temperature which remains higher than surface temperature of earth in winter season and vice versa in summer. For effective utilization of heat capacity of earth, the earth–air heat exchanger (EAHE) has to be designed. The EAHEs are considered as an effective passive heating/cooling medium for buildings. This is basically a series of metallic, plastic or concrete pipes buried underground at a particular depth through which the fresh atmospheric air flows and gets heated in winter and supplied to the building if at sufficiently high temperature and vice versa in summer. Till date many researchers have carried out a number of studies in designing, modeling and testing of EAHEs systems. This paper reviews on the experimental and analytical studies of EAHE systems around the world but the studies are mainly focused on EAHE systems at the Indian universities as of the end June, 2012.

Experimental and analytical studies of earth–air heat exchanger (EAHE) systems in India: A review

Due to their low cost, light weight and corrosive resistant features, polymer heat exchangers have been intensively studied by researchers with the aim to replace metallic heat exchangers in a wide range of applications. This paper reviews the development of polymer heat exchangers in the last decade, including cutting edge materials characteristics, heat transfer enhancement methods of polymer materials and a wide range of polymer heat exchanger applications. Theoretical modelling and experimental testing results have been reviewed and compared with literature. A recent development, the polymer micro-hollow fibre heat exchanger, is introduced and described. It is shown that polymer materials do hold promise for use in the construction of heat exchangers in many applications, but that a considerable amount of research is still required into material properties, thermal performance and life-time behaviour.

Recent research developments in polymer heat exchangers – A review

The use of ground coupled heat exchanger (GCHE) systems is increasing worldwide. They are mainly used for space conditioning, water heating, agricultural drying, bathing, swimming, etc. They reduce cooling load in summer and heating load in winter. GCHE systems make available excellent scope to conserve significant amount of primary energy and thus mitigating the impact on environment through emission reduction. This paper reviews the experimental and modeling studies carried out on GCHE systems. The reviewed literature focuses on performance of both types of GCHE systems viz. earth–air heat exchanger (EAHE) and ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems and brings out their merits and demerits.
