The Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves

We introduce a short signature scheme based on the Computational Diffie-Hellman assumption on certain elliptic and hyperelliptic curves. The signature length is half the size of a DSA signature for a similar level of security. Our short signature scheme is designed for systems where signatures are typed in by a human or signatures are sent over a low-bandwidth channel.

Guide to Elliptic Curve Cryptography

We construct a short group signature scheme. Signatures in our scheme are approximately the size of a standard RSA signature with the same security. Security of our group signature is based on the Strong Diffie-Hellman assumption and a new assumption in bilinear groups called the Decision Linear assumption. We prove security of our system, in the random oracle model, using a variant of the security definition for group signatures recently given by Bellare, Micciancio, and Warinschi.

When Andrew John Wiles was 10 years old, he read Eric Temple Bell’s The Last Problem and was so impressed by it that he decided that he would be the first person to prove Fermat’s Last Theorem. This theorem states that there are no nonzero integers a, b, c, n with n > 2 such that an + bn = cn. The object of this paper is to prove that all semistable elliptic curves over the set of rational numbers are modular. Fermat’s Last Theorem follows as a corollary by virtue of previous work by Frey, Serre and Ribet.

For certain security applications, including identity based encryption and short signature schemes, it is useful to have abelian varieties with security parameters that are neither too small nor too large. Supersingular abelian varieties are natural candidates for these applications. This paper determines exactly which values can occur as the security parameters of supersingular abelian varieties (in terms of the dimension of the abelian variety and the size of the finite field), and gives constructions of supersingular abelian varieties that are optimal for use in cryptography.

Supersingular Abelian Varieties in Cryptology

In this paper we investigate the 2-Selmer rank in families of quadratic twists of elliptic curves over arbitrary number fields. We give sufficient conditions on an elliptic curve so that it has twists of arbitrary 2-Selmer rank, and we give lower bounds for the number of twists (with bounded conductor) that have a given 2-Selmer rank. As a consequence, under appropriate hypotheses we can find many twists with trivial Mordell-Weil group, and (assuming the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture) many others with infinite cyclic Mordell-Weil group. Using work of Poonen and Shlapentokh, it follows from our results that if the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture holds, then Hilbert’s Tenth Problem has a negative answer over the ring of integers of every number field.

We introduce the concept of torus-based cryptography, give a new public key system called CEILIDH, and compare it to other discrete log based systems including Lucas-based systems and XTR. Like those systems, we obtain small key sizes. While Lucas-based systems and XTR are essentially restricted to exponentiation, we are able to perform multiplication as well. We also disprove the open conjectures from [2], and give a new algebro-geometric interpretation of the approach in that paper and of LUC and XTR.
