TL;DR: Tandem mass spectrometry is used to analyse the alkylated aromatic compounds produced in ten different liquefaction and/or extraction samples from the same coal as mentioned in this paper. But the distribution of these compounds from sample-to-sample was found to be similar, which supports the view that small molecules (alkylated aromatic compounds) are entrapped in a macromolecular network.
