Seventeen to 37 million Americans struggle with sexual addictions (P. Carnes, 1994b; A. Cooper, D. L. Delmonico, & R. Burg, 2000; B. Morris, 1999; J. L. Wolf, 2000), yet traditionally trained addictions and offender counselors often find themselves unprepared to assist clients who are sexually addicted. This article provides a general overview of the disorder, explores the ongoing definition debate, and offers clinically proven treatment protocols.

Treating the Sexually Addicted Client: Establishing a Need for Increased Counselor Awareness

Currently there is a need for more concerted attention to career development in corrections settings. Limited research has demonstrated that comprehensive programming focusing on career development issues is a method by which recidivism rates may be reduced. The current literature review explains and clarifies the need for such programming in prison settings and provides practical programming considerations for professionals interested in this area. Current programs targeting career issues are described in addition to an explanation of the limited history of career programming in corrections. Also included are potential resources and recommendations for practitioners.

Career Development Programs in Corrections

Based upon current research findings, this article describes a small group approach to teaching job interview skills to recovering alcoholics and drug abusers. Recovering substance abusers need help in making the transition from treatment to employment. This article presents one way rehabilitation can help satisfy this need.

A Replicable Program for Teaching Job Interview Skills To Recovering Substance Abusers

Thirty-five counselors participated in one of three workshops using the Re-Employment for the Sexual Addict/Offender Program. The workshops were designed to increase counselors' understanding of re-employment strategies for the sexual addict/offender. Although a majority of the participants reported little or no experience with this population, their self-report scores showed a consistent positive change from pre- to post-assessments.
