Closing the gap: increases in life expectancy among treated HIV-positive individuals in the United States and Canada.
Hasina Samji,Angela Cescon,Robert S. Hogg,Robert S. Hogg,Sharada P. Modur,Keri N. Althoff,Kate Buchacz,Ann N. Burchell,Mardge H. Cohen,Kelly A. Gebo,M. John Gill,Amy C. Justice,Gregory D. TL;DR: A 20-year-old HIV-positive adult on ART in the U.S. or Canada is expected to live into their early 70 s, a life expectancy approaching that of the general population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Syphilis increases HIV viral load and decreases CD4 cell counts in HIV-infected patients with new syphilis infections.
Kate Buchacz,Pragna Patel,Melanie M. Taylor,Peter R. Kerndt,Robert H. Byers,Scott D. Holmberg,Jeffrey D. Klausner +6 more
TL;DR: Syphilis infection was associated with significant increases in the HIV viral load and significant decreases in the CD4 cell count, and the findings underscore the importance of preventing and promptly treating syphilis in HIV-infected individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
AIDS-defining opportunistic illnesses in US patients, 1994-2007: a cohort study.
Kate Buchacz,Rose K. Baker,Frank J. Palella,Joan S. Chmiel,Kenneth A. Lichtenstein,Richard M. Novak,Kathleen C. Wood,John T. Brooks +7 more
TL;DR: Opportunistic illness rates declined precipitously after introduction of cART and stabilized at low levels during 2003–2007, and in this contemporary cART era, a third of opportunistic illnesses were diagnosed at CD4 cell counts at least 200 cells/μl.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low CD4+ T Cell Count Is a Risk Factor for Cardiovascular Disease Events in the HIV Outpatient Study
Kenneth A. Lichtenstein,Carl Armon,Kate Buchacz,Joan S. Chmiel,Kern Buckner,Ellen Tedaldi,Kathy Wood,Scott D. Holmberg,John T. Brooks +8 more
TL;DR: CD4(+) count <500 cells/mm(3) is an independent risk factor for incident CVD, comparable in attributable risk to several traditional CVD risk factors in the HIV Outpatient Study cohort.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adherence to antiretroviral therapy in a home-based AIDS care programme in rural Uganda.
Paul J. Weidle,Nafuna Wamai,Peter Solberg,Peter Solberg,Cheryl A. Liechty,Cheryl A. Liechty,Sam Sendagala,Willy Were,Jonathan Mermin,Kate Buchacz,Prosper Behumbiize,Ray L. Ransom,Rebecca Bunnell +12 more
TL;DR: Good adherence and response to antiretroviral therapy can be achieved in a home-based AIDS care programme in a resource-limited rural African setting.
