Multiple stakeholders in multi-criteria decision-making in the context of Municipal Solid Waste Management: A review.

The GIS-multicriteria decision analysis (GIS-MCDA) technique is increasingly used for landslide hazard mapping and zonation. It enables the integration of different data layers with different levels of uncertainty. In this study, three different GIS-MCDA methods were applied to landslide susceptibility mapping for the Urmia lake basin in northwest Iran. Nine landslide causal factors were used, whereby parameters were extracted from an associated spatial database. These factors were evaluated, and then, the respective factor weight and class weight were assigned to each of the associated factors. The landslide susceptibility maps were produced based on weighted overly techniques including analytic hierarchy process (AHP), weighted linear combination (WLC) and ordered weighted average (OWA). An existing inventory of known landslides within the case study area was compared with the resulting susceptibility maps. Respectively, Dempster-Shafer Theory was used to carry out uncertainty analysis of GIS-MCDA results. Result of research indicated the AHP performed best in the landslide susceptibility mapping closely followed by the OWA method while the WLC method delivered significantly poorer results. The resulting figures are generally very high for this area, but it could be proved that the choice of method significantly influences the results.

GIS-based site selection methodology for hybrid renewable energy systems: A case study from western Turkey

Energy management problems associated with rapid institutional, political, technical, ecological, social and economic development have been of critical concern to both national and local governments worldwide for many decades; thus, addressing such issues is a global priority. The main of objective of this study is to provide a review on the application and use of decision making approaches in regard to energy management problems. This paper selected and reviewed 196 published papers, from 1995 to 2015 in 72 important journals related to energy management, which chosen from the “Web of Science” database and in this regard, the systematic and meta-analysis method which called “PRISMA” has been proposed. All published papers were categorized into 13 different fields: environmental impact assessment, waste management, sustainability assessment, renewable energy, energy sustainability, land management, green management topics, water resources management, climate change, strategic environmental assessment, construction and environmental management and other energy management areas. Furthermore, papers were categorized based on the authors, publication year, nationality of authors, region, technique and application, number of criteria, research purpose, gap and contribution, solution and modeling, results and findings. Hybrid MCDM and fuzzy MCDM in the integrated methods were ranked as the first methods in use. The Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Review was the important journal in this paper, with 32 published papers. Finally, environmental impact assessment was ranked as the first area that applied decision making approaches. Results of this study acknowledge that decision making approaches can help decision makers and stakeholders in solving some problems under uncertainties situations in environmental decision making and these approaches have seen increasing interest among previous researchers to use these approaches in various steps of environmental decision making process.

Integrating multi-criteria evaluation techniques with geographic information systems for landfill site selection: A case study using ordered weighted average

This study presents a geographic information systems-based multi-criteria site selection of non-hazardous regional landfill in Polog Region, Macedonia. The multi-criteria decision framework integrates legal requirements and physical constraints that relate to environmental and economic concerns and builds a hierarchy model for landfill suitability. The methodology is used for preliminary assessment of the most suitable landfill sites by combining fuzzy set theory and analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The fuzzy set theory is used to standardize criteria using different fuzzy membership functions while the AHP is used to establish the relative importance of the criteria. The AHP makes pairwise comparisons of relative importance between hierarchy elements grouped by environmental and economic decision criteria. The landfill suitability is achieved by applying weighted linear combination that uses a comparison matrix to aggregate different importance scenarios associated with environmental and economic objectives. The results from the study suggested that a least suitable landfill area of 1.0% from the total is generated when environmental and economic objectives are valued equally while a most suitable landfill area of 1.8% area is generated when the economic objective is valued higher. Such results are aimed for enhancement of regional landfill site selection in the country that is compliant with modern EU standards.

Regional non-hazardous landfill site selection by integrating fuzzy logic, AHP and geographic information systems

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the methodological frameworks and criteria used for municipal solid waste landfill selection. The review is based on 89 scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals from 1983 onwards. The descriptive statistical analyses of the reviewed papers consider temporal, location-based quantitative, and qualitative factors. The papers considered are classified by the country where the case studies were carried out, and the qualitative ranking is performed according to the number of citations. Afterwards, the employed methods and criteria for landfill site selection were extensively analyzed and classified. The summary of the conducted analyses shows that Geographical Information Systems (GIS), either as an individual technique or in combination with other approaches are extensively used. Weighted linear combination is the most frequently applied multi-criteria decision analysis method for ranking of alternatives. The analytical hierarchy process is the dominating method for weighting the criteria. A combination of GIS with Remote Sensing techniques is used in several landfill siting studies as a more appealing approach, due to the capability of real-time data updates. The evaluations of the landfill siting criteria indicate that the most frequent main criterion is environmental, followed by economic and social criteria, while the most preferred sub-criteria is distance to the surface waters. These findings and classifications are beneficial to both, the researchers and decision makers, while serving as a support to the complex and difficult process of real-world landfill site selection.

Comprehensive Review of the Landfill Site Selection Methodologies and Criteria

This paper presents the current situation with water demands for agricultural and non-agricultural users in the Republic of Macedonia. A theoretical background of the competition for water has been presented. The paper consists the present situation with irrigation water requirements in the Republic of Macedonia. Some data about water supply consumption and the consumption of water for industry are presented, too. Particular cases of multipurpose systems where competition and conflict for water has occurred are presented. Hydro-system Strezevo, Hydro-system Strumica and Hydrosystem Lipkovo are cases where agricultural, municipal, industrial and power supply provoked water competition and conflicts. Special case is the regional water supply system Studencica, where water conflict exists among four municipalities and thermo-plant. Competition exists among the municipalities themselves, as well. According to the analyzed situation some recommendations for solving the water conflicts are given. The first part of the conclusions concerns engineering solutions for solving the conflict between users caused by water scarcity. This part is consisted of rehabilitation of distribution systems and structures, then implementation of water conservation techniques and increasing the country’s’ storage capacity. The second part of the conclusions is connected with no engineering solutions of the problem.

Urban and agricultural competition for water in the Republic of Macedonia.

The aim of the paper is to present climate chance impact on drinking water supply and assess availability of current water resources to meet the increasing demands in climate change conditions for the city of Skopje Series of monthly precipitation and temperature data are generated up to 2050, using recorded data and data for predicted changes of air temperature and precipitation according to climate change scenarios developed for the Republic of Macedonia within the Third National Communication Climate change impact on drinking water supply is assessed using statistical models for dependence of the water supply data to the main climate parameters: temperature and precipitation Forecast of future water quantities includes implementation of multi regression models defined with a set of independent variables: number of population for time sets (t, t − 1, t − 2, t − 3), precipitation and air temperature including predicted changes of the data under climate change conditions for the same time sets Two scenarios are analysed: first – predicts the number of population until 2050 remains nearly the same as nowadays, second – predicts increase of number of population on average annual rate of increase of 0,58% Results are indicating shortage of available water resources for population and industry in climate change scenarios (increasing of temperatures and decreasing of precipitations) and increase of population Understanding the vulnerability of both water resources and variability of drinking water demands for the city of Skopje results in identifying the most dominant factors that influence vulnerability It is vital to ensuring sustainable water management in the region
