Journal ArticleDOI
A large outbreak of Clostridium difficile-associated disease with an unexpected proportion of deaths and colectomies at a teaching hospital following increased fluoroquinolone use.
Carlene A. Muto,Marian Pokrywka,Kathleen A. Shutt,Aaron B. Mendelsohn,Kathy Nouri,Kathy Posey,Terri L. Roberts,Karen S. Croyle,Sharon Krystofiak,Sujata Patel-Brown,A. William Pasculle,David L. Paterson,Melissa Saul,Lee H. Harrison +13 more
TL;DR: Investigation of a large C. difficile outbreak in a hospital to identify risk factors and characterize the outbreak found exposure to levofloxacin was an independent risk factor for C. diffuse-associated diarrhea and appeared to contribute substantially to the outbreak.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine on Pneumococcal Meningitis
Heather E. Hsu,Kathleen A. Shutt,Matthew R. Moore,Bernard Beall,Nancy M. Bennett,Allen S. Craig,Monica M. Farley,James H. Jorgensen,Catherine Lexau,Susan Petit,Arthur Reingold,William Schaffner,Ann Thomas,Cynthia G. Whitney,Lee H. Harrison,Lee H. Harrison +15 more
TL;DR: Although the overall effect of the vaccine remains substantial, a recent increase in meningitis caused by non-PCV7 serotypes, including strains nonsusceptible to antibiotics, is a concern.
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in Neisseria meningitidis disease epidemiology in the United States, 1998-2007: implications for prevention of meningococcal disease.
Amanda C. Cohn,Jessica R. MacNeil,Lee H. Harrison,Cynthia Hatcher,Jordan Theodore,Mark Schmidt,Tracy Pondo,Kathryn E. Arnold,Joan Baumbach,Nancy M. Bennett,Allen S. Craig,Monica M. Farley,Ken Gershman,Susan Petit,Ruth Lynfield,Arthur Reingold,William Schaffner,Kathleen A. Shutt,Elizabeth R. Zell,Leonard W. Mayer,Thomas A. Clark,David S. Stephens,Nancy E. Messonnier +22 more
TL;DR: Before the introduction of the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine, the incidence of meningitis disease in the United States decreased to a historic low, however, mening bacteria still causes a substantial burden of disease among all age groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk Factors, Clinical Characteristics, and Outcome of Nocardia Infection in Organ Transplant Recipients: A Matched Case-Control Study
Anton Y. Peleg,Shahid Husain,Zubair A. Qureshi,Fernanda P. Silveira,Molade Sarumi,Kathleen A. Shutt,Eun J. Kwak,David L. Paterson +7 more
TL;DR: Receipt of high-dose steroids, history of cytomegalovirus disease, and high levels of calcineurin inhibitors are independent risk factors for Nocardia infection in organ transplant recipients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Community-Associated Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase–Producing Escherichia coli Infection in the United States
Yohei Doi,Yoon Soo Park,Yoon Soo Park,Jesabel I. Rivera,Jennifer M. Adams-Haduch,Ameet Hingwe,Emilia Mia Sordillo,James S. Lewis,Wanita J. Howard,Laura Johnson,Bruce Polsky,James H. Jorgensen,Sandra S. Richter,Kathleen A. Shutt,David L. Paterson +14 more
TL;DR: A substantial portion of community-onset, ESBL-producing E. coli infections now occur among patients without discernible healthcare-associated risk factors in the United States, which has implications for the empiric management ofcommunity-associated infection when involvement of E. bacteria is suspected.
