Flame aerosol synthesis of nanostructured materials and functional devices: Processing, modeling, and diagnostics

We prove that two charged conducting spheres will almost always attract each other at close approach, even when they have like charges. The one exception is when the two spheres have the same charge ratio that they would obtain by being brought into contact. In this case, they repel, and we derive an analytical expression for the force at contact, for any size ratio, generalizing a force formula for equal spheres obtained by Kelvin in 1853. We also give the electrostatic energy of two arbitrarily charged spheres, and its analytical forms at large and small separations. Expressions are derived for the surface charge densities of the two spheres. Attraction occurs between two positively charged spheres because of mutual polarization: one of the spheres obtains a negatively charged region (neighbouring the other sphere).

An investigation of the treatment of particulate matter from gasoline engine exhaust using non-thermal plasma.

NO x storage performances have been investigated on a Pt/Ba/Al 2 O 3 catalyst by comparison using two types of non-thermal plasma (NTP) reactor: the “PDC system” reactor and the “PFC system” reactor. In the PDC system, the catalyst was placed in the discharge space and was activated by the plasma directly, whereas in the PFC system, the plasma reactor was followed by the catalyst. The results showed that the NO x storage capacity (NSC) of the Pt/Ba/Al 2 O 3 catalyst was significantly enhanced by the non-thermal plasma in the PDC and PFC system, and the PDC system exhibited better promotional effect than the PFC system in the temperature range of 100–300 °C. The NSC of the catalyst was increased with the increase of the input energy density both in the PDC and PFC system due to the higher NO oxidation at higher input energy density. It was also found that the ionic wind induced by plasma in the PDC system enhanced the quantity of the NO adsorbed onto the catalyst surface and therefore could react with the O-radical to form more NO 2 , and thus promote the formation of nitrate on the catalyst.
