The transport properties of disordered solids have been the subject of much work since at least the 1950s, but with a new burst of activity during the 1980s which has survived up to the present day. There have been numerous reviews of a more or less specialized nature. The present review aims to fill the niche for a non-specialized review of this very active area of research. The basic concepts behind the theory are introduced with more detailed sections covering experimental results, one-dimensional localization, scaling theory, weak localization, magnetic field effects and fluctuations.

Localization: theory and experiment

We review the methods which have been developed over the past several years to determine the behavior of solids whose properties vary randomly at the microscopic level, with principal attention to systems having composition variation on a well-defined structure (random "alloys"). We begin with a survey of the various elementary excitations and put the dynamics of electrons, phonons, magnons, and excitons into one common descriptive Hamiltonian; we then review the use of double-time thermodynamic Green's functions to determine the experimental properties of systems. Next we discuss these aspects of the problem which derive from the statistical specification of the microscopic parameters; we examine what information can and cannot be obtained from averaged Green's functions. The central portion of the review concerns methods for calculating the averaged Green's function to successively better approximation, including various self-consistent methods, and higher-order cluster effects. The last part of the review presents a comparison of theory with the experimental results of a variety of properties---optical, electronic, magnetic, and neutron scattering. An epilogue calls attention to the similarity between these problems and those of other fields where random material heterogeneity has played an essential role.

Electrons in disordered systems and the theory of localization

Recent results on theoretical studies of heat conduction in low-dimensional systems are presented. These studies are on simple, yet non-trivial, models. Most of these are classical systems, but some quantum-mechanical work is also reported. Much of the work has been on lattice models corresponding to phononic systems, and some on hard-particle and hard-disc systems. A recently developed approach, using generalized Langevin equations and phonon Green's functions, is explained and several applications to harmonic systems are given. For interacting systems, various analytic approaches based on the Green–Kubo formula are described, and their predictions are compared with the latest results from simulation. These results indicate that for momentum-conserving systems, transport is anomalous in one and two dimensions, and the thermal conductivity κ diverges with system size L as κ ∼ L α. Heat transport in low-dimensional systems

Selected substitutions at one locus can induce stochastic dynamics that resemble genetic drift at a closely linked neutral locus. The pseudohitchhiking model is a one-locus model that approximates these effects and can be used to describe the major consequences of linked selection. As the changes in neutral allele frequencies when hitchhiking are rapid, diffusion theory is not appropriate for studying neutral dynamics. A stationary distribution and some results on substitution processes are presented that use the theory of continuous-time Markov processes with discontinuous sample paths. The coalescent of the pseudohitchhiking model is shown to have a random number of branches at each node, which leads to a frequency spectrum that is different from that of the equilibrium neutral model. If genetic draft, the name given to these induced stochastic effects, is a more important stochastic force than genetic drift, then a number of paradoxes that have plagued population genetics disappear.

The diffusion equations describing the change of gene frequencies are extended to indlude the effect of temporal fluctuation of selection coefficient that may persist for some generations. The equilibrium distribution of gene frequencies and the fixation probability of a mutant gene are obtained from the extended equations. Comparison is made with the experimental data on protein polymorphism. A possible bearing of the fluctuation of selection coefficient on the problem of molecular evolution is discussed in relation to the neutral theory.

Effect of temporal fluctuation of selection coefficient on gene frequency in a population

The Haldane-Muller principle of mutation load is generalized so as to be applicable to both cases of strong and very weak selection with any time variation. It is proved that in an infinite asexual haploid population, the average Malthusian parameter m¯ of a population, the evolution rate ν, and the total mutation rate μ satisfy the relation ∂m¯/∂/∂μ = ν/μ−1, so long as each Malthusian parameter is independent of μ. A similar result is also true in a diploid population under genie selection. It is discussed how the above relation gives a restriction on the possible range of values of relative evolution rate ν/μ.
