Adsorption of doxycycline from aqueous media: A review

The adsorption, electrosorption, and electrodesorption of aqueous, inorganic arsenic on the granular activated carbon (GAC), DARCO 12 × 20 (Darco 1220) GAC, were investigated in solutions containing arsenic as the only contaminant, as well as with chromium, nickel, and iron. Darco 1220 was selected for these investigations primarily because it is relatively ineffective as a normal (unassisted) arsenic adsorbent in the chosen electrolytes at the low loadings used. It is shown that the application of anodic potentials in the 1.0−1.5 V range, however, result in enhanced uptake, most likely because of charging of the electrochemical double layer at the electrode surface. Regeneration (100%) of electrosorbed arsenic was achieved via electrodesorption at a cathodic potential of 1.50 V. The presence of metal ad ions was observed to have a significant and complex effect on arsenic adsorption, electrosorption, and electrodesorption. Electrosorption/Electrodesorption of Arsenic on a Granular Activated Carbon in the Presence of Other Heavy Metals

Diclofenac is an emerging contaminant belonging to the class of pharmaceutical and personal care products, and its presence in drinking water has been reported in several studies nowadays. The adsorption technique has been highlighted due to its operational simplicity, removal efficiency, and low cost, allowing the use of materials of residual origin. Gelatin has favorable characteristics for the production of adsorbent composites, and it can also be obtained from solid wastes from the tannery industry. Thus, this work aimed to produce composite beads based on gelatin recovered from leather wastes tanned with chromium(III) and the addition of carbon nanotubes, to remove diclofenac sodium. For comparison purposes, a composite based on commercial gelatin and carbon nanotubes was also produced. The composite beads were produced using the drip emulsification method. Equilibrium and kinetic tests were performed, and the materials were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Point of zero charge (pHpzc), and Swelling and Water retention capacities. The composite based on gelatin recovered from chromium tanned leather waste and carbon nanotubes showed an adsorption capacity of around 20.57 mg g−1, close to the estimated value for commercial gelatin and carbon nanotubes, that was 26.97 mg g−1. The Freundlich model showed a better fit to the experimental equilibrium data. In adsorption kinetics, the Pseudo-second order model better described the kinetic behavior of removing diclofenac sodium by composite beads.

Efficient adsorption of ciprofloxacin using Ga2S3/S-modified biochar via the high-temperature sulfurization.

In this study, enhanced electrosorption removal of ciprofloxacin is investigated using graphite felt electrodes. The effect of operating parameters like pH, applied voltage, electrolyte concentration, and initial concentration on the removal of ciprofloxacin and enhancement in adsorption capacity of graphite felt was studied. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics were studied. Cyclic voltammogram showed no significant redox peaks at the operated experimental conditions. The adsorption capacity was increased from 0.617 mg g−1 at open circuit voltage to 1.915 mg g−1 at 1.0 V and the corresponding pseudo first order kinetic rate constants were increased from 0.069 min−1 to 0.111 min−1. The adsorption capacity and kinetics observed to be high at pH 3.0 and 10.0 compared to pH 7.0. The electrosorption process performance increased with increasing applied voltage (OCV to 1.5 V) and reduced at high electrolyte concentration (0.1–1.0 M Na2SO4). Experimental data was fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. The electrosorption results proposed that the adsorption rate and adsorptive capacity can be significantly enhanced by electrochemical polarization with the greater affinity derived between the charged ciprofloxacin species and graphite felt. Mechanism of electrosorption removal of ciprofloxacin at different pH is proposed based on the experimental observations.
