Journal ArticleDOI

Connections between pyramidal neurons in layer 5 of cat visual cortex (area 17).

TL;DR: The structural features of two physiologically‐characterised pyramidal neurons (PC1 and PC2) closely situated in layer 5b in the visual cortex of a single cat were studied using a combination of electrophysiological and anatomical techniques to identify these cells as a Meynert cell.
Journal ArticleDOI

Map of the synapses onto layer 4 basket cells of the primary visual cortex of the cat.

TL;DR: The pattern of excitatory and inhibitory inputs to the inhibitory neurons is largely unknown and it is indicated that as much as 79% of the symmetric synapses could have originated from other layer 4 basket cells.
Journal ArticleDOI

Opening the grey box

TL;DR: It is considered here why traditional views of the significance of single neurones are fading in power, and the problem of deciding on the form of a new order is considered.
Journal ArticleDOI

Whose Cortical Column Would that Be

TL;DR: Historically the origins of the concept of the cortical column and the struggles of the pioneers to define the columnar architecture are described and it is suggested that in the conceptof a ‘canonical circuit’ the authors may find the means to reconcile the structure of neocortex with its functional architecture.
