Technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT) are maturing, yet no common standards dictate their direction, leaving space for a plethora of research directions and opportunities. Among the most important IoT topics is security. When we design a robust system, it is important to know the available options for facing common tasks related to access control, authentication, and authorization. In this review, we systematically analyze 1622 peer-reviewed publications from October 2017 to December 2020 to find the taxonomy of security solutions. In addition, we assess and categorize current practices related to IoT security solutions, commonly involved technologies, and standards applied in recent research. This manuscript provides a practical road map to recent research, guiding the reader and providing an overview of recent research efforts.

Systematic Review of Authentication and Authorization Advancements for the Internet of Things

Behavioral bio-metric authentication is considered as a promising approach to securing the internet of things (IoT) ecosystem. In this paper, we investigated the need and suitability of employing voice recognition systems in the user authentication of the IoT. Tools and techniques used in accomplishing voice recognition systems are reviewed, and their appropriateness to the IoT environment are discussed. In the end, a voice recognition system is proposed for IoT ecosystem user authentication. The proposed system has two phases. The first being the enrollment phase consisting of a pre-processing step where the noise is removed from the voice for the enrollment process, the feature extraction step where feature traits are extracted from user’s voice, and the model training step where the voice model is trained for the IoT user. And the second being the phase verifies whether the identity claimer is the owner of the IoT device. Based on the resources limitedness of the IoT technologies, the suitability of text-dependent voice recognition systems is promoted. Likewise, the use of MFCC features is considered in the proposed system.

Voice Biometric Identity Authentication Model for IoT Devices

Nowadays, authentication is required for both physical access to buildings and internal access to computers and systems Biometrics are one of the emerging technologies used to protect these highly sensitive structures However, biometric systems based on a single trait enclose several problems such as noise sensitivity and vulnerability to spoof attacks In this regard, we present in this paper a fully unobtrusive and robust multimodal authentication system that automatically authenticates a user by the way he/she answers his/her phone, after extracting ear and arm gesture biometric modalities from this single action To deal the challenges facing ear and arm gesture authentication systems in real-world applications, we propose a new method based on image fragmentation that makes the ear recognition more robust in relation to occlusion The ear feature extraction process has been made locally using Local Phase Quantization (LPQ) in order to get robustness with respect to pose and illumination variation We also propose a set of four statistical metrics to extract features from arm gesture signals The two modalities are combined on score-level using a weighted sum In order to evaluate our contribution, we conducted a set of experiments to demonstrate the contribution of each of the two biometrics and the advantage of their fusion on the overall performance of the system The multimodal biometric system achieves an equal error rate (EER) of 515%

Robust multimodal biometric authentication on IoT device through ear shape and arm gesture

Cross-modality data processing is critical for the Internet-of-Things (IoT) deployment in healthcare. It can convert the innumerable raw day-to-day medical big data from massive IoT-based medical devices to diagnostic valuable data so that they can be feed to clinical routine. In this article, we propose a novel spatiotemporal two-streams generative adversarial network (SpGAN) as a cross-modality data processing approach to deploy the medical IoT in infarction learning. Our SpGAN remotely converts diagnostic valuable contrast-enhanced images (the “gold standard” for infarction learning, but it requires the injection of contrast agents) directly from raw nonenhanced cine MR images. This converting allows physicians to remotely perform infarction observation and analysis to break through the limitations of time and space by building a cloud computing platform of IoT-based MRI devices. Importantly, this converting offers a low-risk IoT-based manner to eliminate the potential fatal risk caused by contrast agent injection in the current infarction learning workflow. Specifically, SpGAN consists of: 1) a spatiotemporal two-stream framework as an encoding–decoding model to achieve data converting and 2) a spatiotemporal pyramid network enhances those features that are responsible to the infarction learning during encoding to improve decoding performance. Real IoT-based remote diagnosis experiments performed on 230 patients demonstrate that SpGAN provides high-quality converted images for infarction learning and promotes the in-depth application and deployment of IoT in the medical field.

Applying Cross-Modality Data Processing for Infarction Learning in Medical Internet of Things

Biometric authentication is a promising approach to securing the Internet of Things (IoT). Although existing research shows that using multiple biometrics for authentication helps increase recognition accuracy, the majority of biometric approaches for IoT today continue to rely on a single modality. We propose a multimodal biometric approach for IoT based on face and voice modalities that is designed to scale to the limited resources of an IoT device. Our work builds on the foundation of Gofman et al. [7] in implementing face and voice feature-level fusion on mobile devices. We used discriminant correlation analysis (DCA) to fuse features from face and voice and used the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm to classify the features. The approach was implemented on the Raspberry Pi IoT device and was evaluated on a dataset of face images and voice files acquired using a Samsung Galaxy S5 device in real-world conditions such as dark rooms and noisy settings. The results show that fusion increased recognition accuracy by 52.45% compared to using face alone and 81.62% compared to using voice alone. It took an average of 1.34 seconds to enroll a user and 0.91 seconds to perform the authentication. To further optimize execution speed and reduce power consumption, we implemented classification on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chip that can be easily integrated into an IoT device. Experimental results showed that the proposed FPGA-accelerated KNN could achieve 150x faster execution time and 12x lower energy consumption compared to a CPU.
