MEC promises dramatic reduction in latency and mobile energy consumption, tackling the key challenges for materializing 5G vision. A main thrust of MEC research is to seamlessly merge the two disciplines of wireless communications and mobile computing, resulting in a wide-range of new designs ranging from techniques for computation offloading to network architectures. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art MEC research with a focus on joint radio-and-computational resource management. We also discuss a set of issues, challenges, and future research directions for MEC research, including MEC system deployment, cache-enabled MEC, mobility management for MEC, green MEC, as well as privacy-aware MEC. Advancements in these directions will facilitate the transformation of MEC from theory to practice. Finally, we introduce recent standardization efforts on MEC as well as some typical MEC application scenarios.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an enabling technology to engineer the radio signal propagation in wireless networks. By smartly tuning the signal reflection via a large number of low-cost passive reflecting elements, IRS is capable of dynamically altering wireless channels to enhance the communication performance. It is thus expected that the new IRS-aided hybrid wireless network comprising both active and passive components will be highly promising to achieve a sustainable capacity growth cost-effectively in the future. Despite its great potential, IRS faces new challenges to be efficiently integrated into wireless networks, such as reflection optimization, channel estimation, and deployment from communication design perspectives. In this paper, we provide a tutorial overview of IRS-aided wireless communications to address the above issues, and elaborate its reflection and channel models, hardware architecture and practical constraints, as well as various appealing applications in wireless networks. Moreover, we highlight important directions worthy of further investigation in future work.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Wireless Communications: A Tutorial

In this paper, to reduce the congestion rate at the city center and increase the quality of experience (QoE) of each user, the framework of long-range autonomous valet parking (LAVP) is presented, where an Electric Autonomous Vehicle (EAV) is deployed in the city, which can pick up, drop off users at their required spots, and then drive to the car park out of city center autonomously. In this framework, we aim to minimize the overall distance of the EAV, while guarantee all users are served, i.e., picking up, and dropping off users at their required spots through optimizing the path planning of the EAV and number of serving time slots. To this end, we first propose a learning based algorithm, which is named as Double-Layer Ant Colony Optimization (DL-ACO) algorithm to solve the above problem in an iterative way. Then, to make the real-time decision, while consider the dynamic environment (i.e., the EAV may pick up and drop off users from different locations), we further present a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithm, which is known as deep Q network (DQN). The experimental results show that the DL-ACO and DQN-based algorithms both achieve the considerable performance.

Learning-Based Path Planning for Long-Range Autonomous Valet Parking.

We consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with transceiver hardware impairments (HWIs) and RIS phase noise. Different from the existing contributions, the phase shifts of the RIS are designed based on the long-term angle informations. Firstly, an approximate analytical expression of the uplink achievable rate is derived. Then, we use genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize the sum rate and the minimum date rate. Finally, we show that it is crucial to take HWIs into account when designing the phase shift of RIS.

Statistical CSI-Based Transmission Design for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-aided Massive MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments

In this paper, we consider an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) and relay communication network consisting of a base station (BS), a UAV, and multiple ground users. The UAV acts as both a wireless power transmission source and an uplink communication relay. Specifically, an entire transmission period of the considered system is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the UAV transfers the power to the ground users along a well-optimized flight trajectory and meanwhile the users transmit data to the UAV using the harvested energy. Subsequently, in the second stage, the UAV flies to the vicinity of the BS and forwards the data to the BS. For the purpose of minimizing the energy consumed by the UAV, we jointly optimize the time durations of the two stages, the UAV’s transmit powers for WPT and data forwarding, as well as its flight trajectory, subject to the constraints of the quality of service (QoS), the information forwarding, the energy causality, and the mobility of the UAV. The involved optimization problem is non-convex and highly intractable. To this end, we propose an efficient alternating algorithm to iteratively solve two subproblems with respect to the time durations of the two stages and the UAV’s transmit powers and trajectory, respectively. The first subproblem has a closed-form optimal solution and the second subproblem is handled by addressing a surrogate convex problem based on the technique of successive convex approximation. Finally, simulation results confirm the superiority of our proposed algorithm.
