Mosaic, Rust, Brown spot, and Alternaria leaf spot are the four common types of apple leaf diseases. Early diagnosis and accurate identification of apple leaf diseases can control the spread of infection and ensure the healthy development of the apple industry. The existing research uses complex image preprocessing and cannot guarantee high recognition rates for apple leaf diseases. This paper proposes an accurate identifying approach for apple leaf diseases based on deep convolutional neural networks. It includes generating sufficient pathological images and designing a novel architecture of a deep convolutional neural network based on AlexNet to detect apple leaf diseases. Using a dataset of 13,689 images of diseased apple leaves, the proposed deep convolutional neural network model is trained to identify the four common apple leaf diseases. Under the hold-out test set, the experimental results show that the proposed disease identification approach based on the convolutional neural network achieves an overall accuracy of 97.62%, the model parameters are reduced by 51,206,928 compared with those in the standard AlexNet model, and the accuracy of the proposed model with generated pathological images obtains an improvement of 10.83%. This research indicates that the proposed deep learning model provides a better solution in disease control for apple leaf diseases with high accuracy and a faster convergence rate, and that the image generation technique proposed in this paper can enhance the robustness of the convolutional neural network model.

Plants Disease Identification and Classification Through Leaf Images: A Survey

Diseases in plants cause major production and economic losses as well as reduction in both quality and quantity of agricultural products. Now a day's plant diseases detection has received increasing attention in monitoring large field of crops. Farmers experience great difficulties in switching from one disease control policy to another. The naked eye observation of experts is the traditional approach adopted in practice for detection and identification of plant diseases. In this paper we review the need of simple plant leaves disease detection system that would facilitate advancements in agriculture. Early information on crop health and disease detection can facilitate the control of diseases through proper management strategies. This technique will improves productivity of crops. This paper also compares the benefits and limitations of these potential methods. It includes several steps viz. image acquisition, image pre-processing, features extraction and neural network based classification.

An Overview of the Research on Plant Leaves Disease detection using Image Processing Techniques

Producing agricultural products are difficult task as the plant comes to an attack from various micro-organisms, pests and bacterial diseases. The symptoms of the attacks are generally distinguished through the leaves, steams or fruit inspection. The present paper discusses the image processing techniques used in performing early detection of plant diseases through leaf features inspection. The objective of this work is to implement image analysis and classification techniques for extraction and classification of leaf diseases. Leaf image is captured and then processed to determine the status of each plant. Proposed framework is model into four parts image preprocessing including RGB to different color space conversion, image enhancement; segment the region of interest using K-mean clustering for statistical usage to determine the defect and severity areas of plant leaves, feature extraction and classification. texture feature extraction using statistical GLCM and color feature by means of mean values. Finally classification achieved using SVM. This technique will ensure that chemicals only applied when plant leaves are detected to be effected with the disease.
