Plasmonic Catalysis for Energy Conversion-An Overview and Recent Trends

Abstract In this work, we report a wafer-scale and chemical-free fabrication of nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu) heteroatomic Cu–Ni thin films using RF magnetron sputtering technique for non-enzymatic glucose sensing application. The as-prepared wafer-scale Cu–Ni thin films exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a 1.86 μM detection limit in the range of 0.01 mM to 20 mM range. The Cu–Ni film shows 1.3- and 5.4-times higher glucose oxidation activity in comparison to the Cu and Ni electrodes, respectively. The improved electrocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of the bimetallic catalyst and high density of grain boundaries. The Cu–Ni electrodes also possessed excellent anti-interference characteristics. These results indicate that Cu–Ni heteroatomic thin film can be a potential candidate for the development of non-enzymatic glucose biosensor because of its chemical free synthesis, excellent reproducibility, reusability, and long-term stability.

Superior Non-Invasive Glucose Sensor Using Bimetallic CuNi Nanospecies Coated Mesoporous Carbon.

The generation of waste and its treatment is a challenging problem nowadays. Rubber that is generally considered for recycling comes from the tyres of vehicles. After their use, the waste tyres can lead to hazardous effects to both public health and the environment due to inappropriate disposal or storage. The used rubber tyres take an extended period of time to decompose naturally, thereby increasing landfill pollution. Furthermore, the burning of rubber waste produces toxic and carcinogenic gases causing air pollution and risk to the health of living beings. Thus, fabrication of recycled product provides an alternative to avoid the above mentioned negative impacts. Nanofillers play an important role in altering the properties of recycled composite systems. The superior bonding between the nanofiller and rubber results in the improvement of functionality and enhancement of properties of the entire composite system. This chapter discusses the different recycling methods of rubber with hybrid nanofiller additions resulting in the fabrication of recycled nanocomposites which could be used as filler-extenders, ion exchangers or in road pavements.

CHAPTER 12:Hybrid Nano-filler for Value Added Rubber Compounds for Recycling

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a technique of utmost significance when dealing with the characterization of the polymers and their nanocomposites. This chapter focuses on the influence of this particular technique in analyzing the filler dispersion, functionalization, interfacial interactions, etc. existing in nanocomposites. In light of the very recent discoveries to utilize one- and two-dimensional solid-state NMR methods in structural biology (to investigate the structure and function of nucleic acids or proteins) and the pharmaceutical industry (to identify new drugs), its resolution and selectivity on the structure and dynamics of a wide range of polymers and nanocomposites are discussed. All kinds of NMR techniques allow semiquantitative monitoring of changes in segmental dynamics near the polymer-filler interface and bonding within the polymer chain and are discussed in this chapter.
