A high temperature surface combustion burner, comprises a burner head having an air fuel mixed gas supply inlet, a burner plate secured to said burner head, wherein the burner plate is made of a ceramic porous body having more than 30% by volume of pores of 25 to 500 μm in mean pore diameter; and a plurality of throughholes having a 0.05 to 5.0 mm diameter and provided in said burner plate at intervals of 2 to 30 mm and substantially vertically extending with respect to the combustion surface. Another surface combustion burner comprises a burner head having an air fuel mixed gas supply inlet, a burner element secured to said burner head, said burner element consisting of a ceramic porous body having pores sufficiently communicated from its inside to its outside for diffusing an air fuel mixed gas, wherein said ceramic porous body has 75 to 95% by volume in total of communicated pores of 0.5 to 5.0 mm in mean pore diameter; and a plurality of throughholes each having a hydraulic diameter of 0.05-5.0 mm and substantially vertically extending with respect to the combustion surface and provided in said burner element at intervals of 2 to 30 mm.

OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus are provided for establishing and controlling the stability and movement of a reaction wave of reacting gases in a matrix of solid heat-resistant matter, wherein such reacting gases may be recuperatively pre-heated. At least a portion of the bed is initially preheated above the autoignition temperature of the mixture whereby the mixture reacts upon being introduced into the matrix thereby initiating a self-sustaining reaction region, after which the pre-heating can be terminated. The stability and movement of the wave within the matrix is maintained by monitoring the temperatures along the flowpath of the gases through the bed and adjusting the flow of the gases and/or vapors or air to maintain and stabilize the wave in the bed. The method and apparatus provide for the reaction or combustion of gases to minimize NOx and undesired products of incomplete combustion. A recuperative heat exchange system may be used to preheat the reactants with heat generated by the reaction by channeling hot exhaust gases through the matrix surrounding reactant inlet tubes. The inlet tubes are thermally conducting and contain an interior matrix. The matrices interior to and surrounding the inlet tubes promote radiative heat transfer.

Method and apparatus for controlled reaction in a reaction matrix

PURPOSE: To improve the filtration efficiency by lowering the filter density at an inlet region by decreasing particle amount at the inlet region using a filter body by adding a woven cloth, braiding fabric or knitted fabric with its wire or powdery, granular or chip-like particles which are sintered with the wires or fibers. CONSTITUTION: Wires 1 and fibers being at least partially connected to one another by sintering or welding are constructed in a single layer or more as woven cloth, connected or knitted fabric. In the filter or the catalyst body, a woven cloth, braiding fabric or knitted fabric comprises powdery granular or chip-like particles 2 sintered with the wires 1 and fibers to lower the filter density at the inlet region 3 by decreasing amount of particles 2 than other region. Consequently, it is possible to improve the filtration efficiency by enlarging surface area of the filter body.

A method and system for reducing pollutant concentration within an internal combustion engine exhaust stream is disclosed. Soot and products of incomplete combustion in the engine exhaust stream are destroyed by oxidizing them in a flameless thermal oxidizer that contains a matrix of heat-resistant media. Methods and systems for increasing particle residence time within the thermal oxidizer are also disclosed. These techniques include employing electrostatic precipitation, centrifugal force, and particle impaction sections. A method and system for reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions is also disclosed. Low NOx concentration may be obtained by adding a SCR system after a thermal oxidizer, by tuning the engine to produce low NOx/high soot and destroying the soot in a thermal oxidizer, and by injecting a reductant into the thermal oxidizer. The flameless thermal oxidizer may be located between the engine and a turbo-charger to enhance thermal efficiency and to reduce turbo-charger wear. The thermal oxidizer comprises longitudinal and radial flow systems, which each may include a reaction wave of the following shapes: planar, cylindrical, Bunsen, Burke-Schumann, and an inverted V. An engineered matrix is disclosed to manipulate the shape of the reaction zone.

Method and apparatus for recuperative heating of reactants in an reaction matrix

Flameless combustion of gaseous or vaporous fuel-air mixtures is accomplished without a catalyst in a perforated sintered block which forms one wall of a mixing chamber. The fuel air mixture is first passed through the perforated sintered block at a relatively low flow rate and burned at the entrance surface of the block until the latter has reached a temperature of approximately 950* C. At that point, the flow rate of the fuelair mixture is increased by approximately 10 to 50 times to cause the combustion to take place within the perforated sintered block and the temperature of the latter to be increased to approximately 1,000* to 2,000 * C.
