In the laser treatment of a workpiece (9), e.g. for surface hardening, melting, alloying, cladding, welding or cutting, the adverse effect of reflectivity of the surface, when a pure, monochromatic laser (6) is used, is remedied by the simultaneous application of a relatively shorter wavelength beam (1). The two beams (1)(5) may be combined by a beam coupler (4) or may reach the workpiece (9) by separate optical paths (not shown). The shorter wavelength beam (1) improves the coupling efficiency of the higher- powered laser beam (5).

Roughness determines many functional properties of surfaces, such as adhesion, friction, and (thermal and electrical) contact conductance. Recent analytical models and simulations enable quantitative prediction of these properties from knowledge of the power spectral density (PSD) of the surface topography. The utility of the PSD is that it contains statistical information that is unbiased by the particular scan size and pixel resolution chosen by the researcher. In this article, we first review the mathematical definition of the PSD, including the one- and two-dimensional cases, and common variations of each. We then discuss strategies for reconstructing an accurate PSD of a surface using topography measurements at different size scales. Finally, we discuss detecting and mitigating artifacts at the smallest scales, and computing upper/lower bounds on functional properties obtained from models. We accompany our discussion with virtual measurements on computer-generated surfaces. This discussion summarizes how to analyze topography measurements to reconstruct a reliable PSD. Analytical models demonstrate the potential for tuning functional properties by rationally tailoring surface topography - however, this potential can only be achieved through the accurate, quantitative reconstruction of the power spectral density of real-world surfaces.

The present invention provides a fixing apparatus with a pair of fixing members at least one of which is rotatable, a nip being formed between the fixing members and a recording material which carries a non-fixed toner being conveyed through the nip and heated at the nip to fix the non-fixed toner onto the recording material. The apparatus has a cleaning mode for cleaning the fixing member, in which a sheet is pinched by the nip, and the sheet is conveyed in a direction by repeating rotation and stoppage of the rotatable fixing member.

After cleaning the front and back sides of a silicon wafer with a liquid SC-1 and liquid SC-2, the front and back sides of the silicon wafer are cleaned with an HF solution to be water-repellent surfaces. Following that, an epitaxial layer of silicon is formed on the front side. Consequently, there can be reduced stacking faults after formation of the epitaxial layer and occurrence of cloud on the back side. Alternatively, the front and back sides of a silicon wafer are cleaned with the liquid SC-1 and liquid SC-2, and then the back side of the silicon wafer is cleaned with an HF solution to be a water-repellent surface while the front side is cleaned with purified water to be a hydrophilic surf ace. Following that, an epitaxial layer of silicon is formed on the front side. Consequently, there can be reduced mounds on the front side and occurrence of cloud on the back side.

Study on the gaits of an inchworm robot through a narrow path

The effects of cutting conditions on the surface roughness in a micro-end-milling process of a mold material are described in this paper. Micro-end-milling operations were performed under different cutting conditions such as feed rate and depth of cut, in order to investigate the factors that had the greatest influence on the finished surface during micro-end-milling. It was revealed that the surface roughness begins to deteriorate when the radial depth of the cut exceeds the tool radius. In addition, it was found that this phenomenon is peculiar to micro-end-milling processes.
