Computer Controlled Systems: Theory and Design

Recent interest in high-speed scanning probe microscopy for high-throughput applications including video-rate atomic force microscopy and probe-based nanofabrication has sparked attention on the development of high-bandwidth flexure-guided nanopositioning systems (nanopositioners). Such nanopositioners are designed to move samples with sub-nanometer resolution with positioning bandwidth in the kilohertz range. State-of-the-art designs incorporate uniquely designed flexure mechanisms driven by compact and stiff piezoelectric actuators. This paper surveys key advances in mechanical design and control of dynamic effects and nonlinearities, in the context of high-speed nanopositioning. Future challenges and research topics are also discussed.

Invited review article: high-speed flexure-guided nanopositioning: mechanical design and control issues.

In this chapter we give an overview of the field of iterative learning control (ILC). We begin with a detailed description of the ILC technique, followed by two illustrative examples that give a flavor of the nature of ILC algorithms and their performance. This is followed by a topical classification of some of the literature of ILC and a discussion of the connection between ILC and other common control paradigms, including conventional feedback control, optimal control, adaptive control, and intelligent control. Next, we give a summary of the major algorithms, results, and applications of ILC given in the literature. This discussion also considers some emerging research topics in ILC. As an example of some of the new directions in ILC theory, we present some of our recent results that show how ILC can be used to force a desired periodic motion in an initially non-repetitive process: a gas-metal arc welding system. The chapter concludes with summary comments on the past, present, and future of ILC.

Three specialized digital controllers applied as plug-in modules to a winchester disk drive with a pre-existing analog feedback controller to demonstrate their efficacy in the reduction of this periodic component. These controllers include the discrete time repetitive controller which is based on the internal model principle and feedforward cancellation controllers based on an adaptive prediction algorithm and on input and output measurements of the system.

In this paper, the rigid stability requirement is relaxed by including an appropriately chosen filter in the repetitive signal generator. Lacking an internal model, perfect regulation is not assured in the modified system. The steady-state and stochastic performances of the resulting system are analyzed. A high repetitive gain may give good steady-state performance, but the variance propagation of stochastic disturbances is large. The converse is true when the repetitive gain is small. The performance of the modified scheme is evaluated by applying it to a simulated disk-file actuator system
