Viburnum opulus (VO) is a valuable decorative, medicinal, and food plant. This deciduous shrub is found in natural habitats in Europe, Russia, and some regions in North Africa and North Asia. The VO is traditionally used to treat aliments such as cough, colds, tuberculosis, rheumatic aches, ulcers, stomach, and kidney problems, among others. Many of the health-promoting properties of VO are associated with antioxidant activity, which has been demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The results of in vitro studies show the antimicrobial potential of VO, especially against Gram-positive bacteria. In cell-based studies, VO demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, osteogenic, cardio-protective, and cytoprotective properties. The applicability of VO in the treatment of urinary tract diseases, endometriosis, and some cancers has been confirmed in in vivo studies. The health benefits of VO result from the presence of bioactive components such as phenolic compounds, vitamin C, carotenoids, iridoids, and essential oils. The aim of this review is to present an overview of the botanical characteristics, chemical compositions, including bioactive compounds, and pro-health properties of VO different morphological parts.

Viburnum opulus L.-A Review of Phytochemistry and Biological Effects.

Flowers, leaves and fruits of hawthorn plant are traditionally used for treating diseases like hypertension and atherosclerosis The medicinal effects of the plant are generally attributed to its phenolic compounds However, the fruits are perishable materials because of their high content of water, and generally dried and stored to be used outside its season The main aim of this research was to investigate the effect of different drying methods on phenolic compounds of the hawthorn fruit Fruits were collected from the wild growing trees in Turkey De-seeded fruits were dried in freeze-, oven- (60 o C) and microwave pretreated oven drying (microwave application for 5 min at 360 W before drying at 60 o C) methods and analyzed for antioxidant activity, phenolic compounds, total phenolic content and color parameters Total phenolic content of fresh hawthorn fruits was found as 1336 mg g -1 DW Oven- and microwave pretreated oven drying methods had a reductive effect on total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of fruits when compared to freeze drying method (-)-Epicatechin (99410 mg kg -1 DW), rutin (76530 mg kg -1 DW), and procyanidin B2 (55380 mg kg -1 DW) were the main phenolics of the fruit Lowest values of these three compounds were observed in oven-dried fruits Microwave pretreatment oven drying method resulted in browner product Although the highest phenolic concentration and antioxidant activity were occurred in freeze-dried sample, microwave pretreatment before oven drying could be applied to reduce the time and cost of drying in terms of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity

Effect of Freeze, Oven and Microwave Pretreated Oven Drying on Color, Browning Index, Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Hawthorn (Crataegus orientalis) Fruit

Background: The Hawthorn (Crateagus sp.) mostly occurs around the temperate region of the world with a high number of species, producing a fruit with numerous beneficial effects for human health. The aim of the study was to determine organic acid and sugar contents in the fruit of a number of hawthorn species grown in Erzincan province of Turkey. Results: Citric acid was the predominant organic acid in all hawthorn species and C. pseudoheterophylla had the highest citric acid content (23.688 g/100 g). There were not statistically significant differences among hawthorn species (except C. atrosanguinea Pojark) in terms of fumaric acid content. C.pontica C.Koch had a higher content of vitamin C (9.418 mg/100 g) compared to other species. Fructose was the predominant sugar component in all species and C. monogyna subsp. monogyna Joiq had the highest fructose content (18.378 g/100 g). Conclusions: The high fruit quality of the studied species indicates the importance of this fruit in human nutrition as a natural source. The study revealed that there were differences in terms of fruit characteristics among hawthorn species and thus better quality hawthorn genotypes can be selected within the species. Hence, this study is considered to be a valuable reference for forthcoming studies. Organic acids, sugars, vitamin C content and some pomological characteristics of eleven hawthorn species (Crataegus spp.) from Turkey

Characterization of European cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus L.) genetic resources in Turkey

Bu calismada hasat oncesi UV-C, Sicak Su ve UV-C + Sicak Su uygulamalarinin Mersin Toroslar kosullarinda yetistirilen ‘0900 Ziraat’ kiraz cesidinin sogukta muhafazasi suresince kalite ve ozellikle fenolik bilesiklerin degisimleri incelenmistir. Bu amacla depolama oncesi kiraz meyvelerine 5 dakika sureyle UV-C ve 1 dakika sureyle 50 °C’de sicak uygulamasi yapilmistir. Tam olum doneminde hasat edilen meyveler 20 gun sure ile modifiye atmosfer paketleri (Xtend®) icerisinde 0 ˚C sicaklik ve %90±5 oransal nem kosullarinda depolanmistir. Depolama periyodu suresince her 4. gun meyve orneklerinde; agirlik kaybi, meyve kabuk rengi, suda cozunebilir kuru madde, titre edilebilir asit miktari, toplam fenolik ve antioksidan analizleri yapilmistir. Ayrica uygulamalarin fenolik maddelere etkileri detayli olarak incelenmistir. Calisma sonucunda ele alinmis olan butun kalite degerlerinde hasat sonrasi kimyasal icermeyen ve alternatif bir uygulama olan UV-C uygulamasinin depolama suresince meyve kalitesini daha iyi korudugu, ayni zamanda fenolik maddelerden protokatesuik, klorojenik asit ve Q-kumarik asit miktarinda azalmayi sinirlandirdigi tespit edilmistir.

Effects of Post-Harvest UV-C and Hot Water Treatments on Quality Attributes of ‘0900 Ziraat’ Cherries throughout the Cold Storage in Modified Atmosphere Packages

Investigation of Some Physicochemical Traits and Changes After Storage of Fruits Belonging to ‘Zivzik’ Pomegranate Genotypes Grown in Siirt, Turkey

Turkey has a very rich flora due to diverse climatic and topographic
 conditions within the country. Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) is an
 important wild edible fruits and widely distributed in Turkey and well known
 for its fruit antioxidants and nutrients. In this study, phytochemical
 content in fruits of a number of Cornelian cherry genotypes in Erzincan
 region were determined. The biochemical analysis included organic acids,
 sugars, vitamin C, antioxidant and individual phenolic compounds. In the
 study, organic acid content was between 253.09 mg/100 g and 112.50 mg/100 g.
 Vitamin C content varied between 115.85 mg/100g and 43.77 mg/100 g.
 Likewise, the sugar content of Cornelian cherry fruits varied from 6.17
 g/100 g to 4.06 g/100 g. When the antioxidant content was examined, the
 highest antioxidant was 980.91 ?mol TE/g fresh weight (FW) base and the
 lowest was 490.38 ?mol TE/g FW. In the genotypes examined, gallic acid was
 determined as the highest among the individual phenolic compounds, while the
 individual phenolic amounts ranged from 38.93 mg/100 g FW to 4.31 mg/100 g
 FW. As a result of the study, it was determined that Cornelian cherry fruits
 are very rich in vitamin C and other phytochemicals and as a result of this
 examination, 24ER04 and 24ER08 genotypes came to the fore.
