Determining asthma treatment by monitoring sputum cell counts: effect on exacerbations
L Jayaram,Marcia Margaret Menezes Pizzichini,Richard J. Cook,L.-P. Boulet,Catherine Lemière,Emilio Pizzichini,André Cartier,P. Hussack,Charles H. Goldsmith,M. Laviolette,Krishnan Parameswaran,Frederick E. Hargreave +11 more
TL;DR: Monitoring sputum cell counts was found to benefit patients with moderate-to-severe asthma by reducing the number of eosinophilic exacerbations and by reduced the severity of both eos inophilic and noneosinophile exacerbations without increasing the total corticosteroid dose.
Journal ArticleDOI
Altered Respiratory Physiology in Obesity
TL;DR: Weight reduction and physical activity are effective means of reversing the respiratory complications of obesity and the effects of obesity contributes to asthma and airway hyper-responsiveness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Induced Sputum Cell Counts in Healthy Adults
J. Belda,Richard Leigh,Krishnan Parameswaran,Paul M. O'Byrne,Malcolm R. Sears,Frederick E. Hargreave +5 more
TL;DR: This study has identified reference values for total and differential cell counts in induced sputum of healthy adults and identified female gender and atopy were associated with a significant elevation of eosinophils.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sputum eosinophilia predicts benefit from prednisone in smokers with chronic obstructive bronchitis
Emilio Pizzichini,Marcia Margaret Menezes Pizzichini,Peter G. Gibson,Krishnan Parameswaran,Gerald J. Gleich,Les Berman,Jerry Dolovich,Frederick E. Hargreave +7 more
TL;DR: Findings indicate that in smokers with severe airflow limitation, sputum eosinophilia predicts a beneficial effect of prednisone treatment, and improvement in FEV1, after prednis one treatment in this population, is small, and may not be appreciated in clinical practice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leukotriene receptor antagonists for allergic rhinitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
TL;DR: Leukotriene receptor antagonists are modestly better than placebo, as effective as antihistamines, but less effective than nasal corticosteroids in improving symptoms and quality of life in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis.
