Summary of research progress on industrial flue gas desulfurization technology

A laboratory-scale well-mixed thermostatic reactor with continuously blasting air was used to investigate the oxidation inhibition of sulfite in dual alkali flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system. The effects of operating parameters such as pH value and catalyst concentration on the oxidation were studied. Sodium thiosulfate was used in the system, and was found that it significantly inhabited the sulfite oxidation. In the absence of catalyst, sodium thiosulfate at 12.67 mmol/L had an inhibition efficiency of approximately 98%. While in the presence of catalyst, sodium thiosulfate at 26.72 mmol/L had an inhibition efficiency less than 85.0%. The oxidation reaction order of sulfite in the sodium thiosulfate was determined to be -1.90 and -0.55 in the absence and presence of the catalyst, respectively. Apparent activation energy of oxidation inhibition was calculated to be 53.9 kJ/mol. Pilot tests showed that the consumption rate of thiosulfate agreed well with the laboratory-scale experimental results.

Oxidation inhibition of sulfite in dual alkali flue gas desulfurization system.

A method of removing SO3 from a flue gas stream includes providing a reaction compound selected from the group consisting of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium sesquicarbonate, and mixtures thereof. The reaction compound is injected into the flue gas stream. The temperature of the flue gas is between about 500~ F and about 850~ F. The reaction compound is maintained in contact with the flue gas for a time sufficient to react a portion of the reaction compound with a portion of the SO3 to reduce the concentration of the SO3 in the flue gas stream.

Method of removing sulfur trioxide from a flue gas stream

A process is described for making flue gas gypsum from desulfurization of power plant exhaust gas. The process comprises treating the flue gas in a wash tower with a wash water suspension containing calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate and converting the scrubbed sulfur dioxide by oxidation with input atmospheric oxygen and by crystallization to calcium sulfate dihydrate crystals. A cyclic flow is drawn from the wash tower sump and delivered by spray nozzles to the wash tower. Further the process comprises continuously drawing an additional crystal suspension from the wash tower sump which after separation of a crystal slurry is partly fed back to the wash tower sump. The lower run-off of a cyclone separator receiving the crystal suspension is dewatered, the flue gas gypsum is separated and a clear effluent is returned to the wash tower. A partial flow is separated from the upper run-off of the cyclone separator and a solid free fluid replaces it. By control of the amount of the partial flow separated from the upper run-off the grain size of the removed gypsum or calcium sulfate dihydrate crystals is precisely adjusted and the proportion of finely divided solids in the wash tower sump is adjusted so that at least 10 weight %, advantageously 20 to 70 weight %, of the solid material contained in the crystal slurry remains in the upper run-off of the cyclone separator.

Process for making calcium sulfate dihydrate or gypsum

In a wet lime desulfurization of exhaust gases containing SO 2 and fly ash, a method and apparatus for treating absorbent solution slurry-containing fly ash includes diverting at least a part of the absorbent solution slurry containing fly ash particles, separating the diverted absorbent solution slurry by centrifugal separation into the solid gypsum component and a liquid component of a suspension containing fine fly ash particles, adjusting the pH value of the suspension containing fine fly ash particles remaining in a filtrate to 6 to 9 by adding an alkali, supplying the pH adjusted suspension to a thickener, removing concentrated sludge from the thickener, passing overflow H 2 O from the thickener to a limestone slurry tank, and passing slurry from the limestone slurry tank to the absorbent solution slurry as make-up feed. Ill effects caused by fly ash and HF in exhaust gases are avoided, the activity of CaCo 3 in the absorbent slurry is maintained, and highly pure gypsum is recovered.

Method and apparatus for treating absorbent solution slurry containing fly ash

A flue gas desulfurization method for efficiently removing sulfur oxides from a gas stream with an aqueous sodium sulfite- and sodium bisulfite-containing absorption solution, in which absorber effluent solution at a pH of from 5.8 to 6.6 and having an active sodium concentration of from 0.5 M to 0.9 M is regenerated with sufficient ground limestone to yield a treated solution with a higher pH of from 6.3 to 7.0 and whose bisulfite concentration is reduced by from 35 to 70%.

Sodium-limestone double alkali flue gas desulfurization method

A method for improving utilization of limestone in a sodium-limestone double alkali flue gas desulfuriza­tion process. Spent alkaline absorber solution, con­taining sodium sulfite and sodium bisulfite, is diverted for regeneration treatment in a series of stirred tank reactors, where it is contacted with the limestone regenerating agent. Dilute slurry from the last reactor is concentrated in a thickener, and the concentrated underflow slurry from the thickener is then treated further in an after-reactor circuit. Since the thickener underflow slurry contains residual unreacted limestone, the slurry is contacted with a side stream of spent alkaline absorber solution in the after-reactor circuit to promote further reaction of residual limestone before the solids are separated and discarded.
