Automotive disc brake squeal

This paper reviews numerical methods and analysis procedures used in the study of automotive disc brake squeal. It covers two major approaches used in the automotive industry, the complex eigenvalue analysis and the transient analysis. The advantages and limitations of each approach are examined. This review can help analysts to choose right methods and make decisions on new areas of method development. It points out some outstanding issues in modelling and analysis of disc brake squeal and proposes new research topics. It is found that the complex eigenvalue analysis is still the approach favoured by the automotive industry and the transient analysis is gaining increasing popularity.

Moving-load dynamic problems: A tutorial (with a brief overview)

This survey is devoted to a significant role of var ious dry friction laws in engineering sciences. Both advantages and disadvantages of a frict ional process are illustrated and discussed, but excluding the nature of friction. It is shown how the classic friction laws and modern friction theories exists in today pure and a pplied sciences. Static and dynamic friction models are described. An important role of purely theoretical and experimental investigations in developing the appropriate fricti on models is outlined putting an emphasis on new approaches (models proposed by Bay-Wanheim, Dahl, Bliman-Sorine, LundGrenoble, as well as atomic scale and fractal model s, among others). Friction treated as a complex process being in interaction with wear, hea t emission and deformation is also discussed. Then an impact of dry friction models on today dynamical systems theory is reviewed. Finally, an application of friction to mo del a brake mechanism as a mechanical system with two degrees-of-freedom including experimental and numerical analyses is given. Analysis of Dynamic Systems With Various Friction Laws

Considerable effort is spent in the design and testing of disk brake systems installed in modern passenger cars. This effort can be reduced if appropriate mathematical-mechanical models are used for studying the dynamics of these brakes. In this context, the mechanism generating brake squeal in particular deserves closer attention. The present paper is devoted to the modeling of self-excited vibrations of moving continua generated by frictional forces. Special regard is given to an accurate formulation of the kinematics of the frictional contact in two and three dimensions. On the basis of a travelling Euler-Bernoulli beam and a rotating annular Kirchhoff plate with frictional point contact the essential properties of the contact kinematics leading to self-excited vibrations are worked out. A Ritz discretization is applied and the obtained approximate solution is compared to the exact one of the traveling beam. A minimal disk brake model consisting of the discretized rotating Kirchhoff plate and idealized brake pads is analyzed with respect to its stability behavior resulting in traceable design proposals for a disk brake.

Friction Induced Vibrations in Moving Continua and Their Application to Brake Squeal

This paper describes the modeling, theoretical formulation, and eigenvalue analysis for a combined system of a spinning flexible disk and a pair of head and suspension systems that contact the disk at opposing points on its two sides. In the analytical model a constant friction force between the sliders and disk and the slider pitch motion, as well as its transverse motion, are taken into account. From the eigenvalue analysis it is found that pitch stiffness and moment of inertia of the heads induce instability above the critical rotation speed similarly to the transverse stiffness and mass. This instability can be effectively stabilized by increasing the external damping which is spinning with the disk. It is also found that the friction force makes all forward modes unstable over the entire rotational speed range. The friction induced instability can be effectively suppressed by increasing the transverse stiffness and mass and it can be stabilized by the pitch damping and the external damping. The characteristics of instability due to the friction force qualitatively agree well with experimental results reported previously.
