Journal ArticleDOI
Circulating Irisin in Relation to Insulin Resistance and the Metabolic Syndrome
Kyung Hee Park,Lesya Zaichenko,Mary Brinkoetter,Bindiya Thakkar,Ayse Sahin-Efe,Ayse Sahin-Efe,Kyoung Eun Joung,Michael A. Tsoukas,Eleni Geladari,Joo Young Huh,Fadime Dincer,Cynthia Davis,Judith A. Crowell,Christos S. Mantzoros,Christos S. Mantzoros +14 more
TL;DR: Irisin is associated with increased risk of MetS, cardiometabolic variables, and CVD in humans, indicating either increased secretion by adipose/muscle tissue and/or a compensatory increase of irisin to overcome an underlying irisin resistance in these subjects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physiology and role of irisin in glucose homeostasis
Nikolaos Perakakis,Georgios Triantafyllou,José Manuel Fernández-Real,Joo Young Huh,Kyung Hee Park,Jochen Seufert,Christos S. Mantzoros,Christos S. Mantzoros +7 more
TL;DR: This Review presents the current knowledge on the physiology of irisin and its role in glucose homeostasis, and describes the mechanisms involved in the synthesis, secretion, circulation and regulation of irisin, and the controversies regarding the measurement.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exercise-Induced Irisin Secretion Is Independent of Age or Fitness Level and Increased Irisin May Directly Modulate Muscle Metabolism Through AMPK Activation
Joo Young Huh,Vassilis Mougios,Athanasios Kabasakalis,Ioannis G. Fatouros,Aikaterina Siopi,Ioannis I. Douroudos,Andreas Filippaios,Grigorios Panagiotou,Kyung Hee Park,Kyung Hee Park,Christos S. Mantzoros,Christos S. Mantzoros +11 more
TL;DR: In vitro experiments showed that irisin facilitates glucose and lipid metabolism in human muscle through AMP kinase phosphorylation, and exercise-induced irisin secretion is independent of age or fitness level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Irisin in response to exercise in humans with and without metabolic syndrome
Joo Young Huh,Aikaterina Siopi,Vassilis Mougios,Kyung Hee Park,Kyung Hee Park,Christos S. Mantzoros,Christos S. Mantzoros +6 more
TL;DR: Exercise is able to increase circulating irisin levels in individuals with the metabolic syndrome as well as healthy individuals, and whether this increase may contribute to the beneficial effects of exercise on patients withThe metabolic syndrome remains to be studied further.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pharmacotherapy of type 2 diabetes: An update.
Jagriti Upadhyay,Stergios A. Polyzos,Nikolaos Perakakis,Bindiya Thakkar,Stavroula A Paschou,Niki Katsiki,Patricia Underwood,Kyung Hee Park,Jochen Seufert,Eun Seok Kang,Elliot Sternthal,Asterios Karagiannis,Christos S. Mantzoros +12 more
TL;DR: The aim of this narrative review is to summarize the pharmacologic treatment options available for patients with T2DM, outlining medication effects, side effects, glycemic control, effect on weight, indications and contraindications, and use in selected populations.
