This paper describes a least squares (LS) channel estimation scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems based on pilot tones. We first compute the mean square error (MSE) of the LS channel estimate. We then derive optimal pilot sequences and optimal placement of the pilot tones with respect to this MSE. It is shown that the optimal pilot sequences are equipowered, equispaced, and phase shift orthogonal. To reduce the training overhead, an LS channel estimation scheme over multiple OFDM symbols is also discussed. Moreover, to enhance channel estimation, a recursive LS (RLS) algorithm is proposed, for which we derive the optimal forgetting or tracking factor. This factor is found to be a function of both the noise variance and the channel Doppler spread. Through simulations, it is shown that the optimal pilot sequences derived in this paper outperform both the orthogonal and random pilot sequences. It is also shown that a considerable gain in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be obtained by using the RLS algorithm, especially in slowly time-varying channels.

Optimal training design for MIMO OFDM systems in mobile wireless channels

Techniques are described for efficiently estimating and compensating for the effects of a communication channel in a multi-carrier wireless communication system. The techniques exploit the fact that the transmitted symbols are drawn from a finite-alphabet to efficiently estimate the propagation channel for multi-carrier communication systems, such systems using OFDM modulation. A transmitter transmits data through a communication channel according to the modulation format. A receiver includes a demodulator to demodulate the data and an estimator to estimate the channel based on the demodulated data. The channel estimator applies a power-law operation to the demodulated data to identify the channel. The techniques can be used in both blind and semi-blind modes of channel estimation.

Quadrature Amplitude Modulation: From Basics to Adaptive Trellis-Coded, Turbo-Equalised and Space-Time Coded OFDM, CDMA and MC-CDMA Systems

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely adopted in modern wireless communication systems due to its robustness against the frequency selectivity of wireless channels. For coherent detection, channel estimation is essential for receiver design. Channel estimation is also necessary for diversity combining or interference suppression where there are multiple receive antennas. In this paper, we will present a survey on channel estimation for OFDM. This survey will first review traditional channel estimation approaches based on channel frequency response (CFR). Parametric model (PM)-based channel estimation, which is particularly suitable for sparse channels, will be also investigated in this survey. Following the success of turbo codes and low-density parity check (LDPC) codes, iterative processing has been widely adopted in the design of receivers, and iterative channel estimation has received a lot of attention since that time. Iterative channel estimation will be emphasized in this survey as the emerging iterative receiver improves system performance significantly. The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and OFDM has been widely accepted in modern communication systems, and channel estimation in MIMO-OFDM systems will also be addressed in this survey. Open issues and future work are discussed at the end of this paper.

The selection of groups at the output of the transformer for obtaining channel information for the channel allows the construction of a simplified receiver.

Apparatus and method for estimating a plurality of channels

We propose an efficient channel estimation technique for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with transmitter diversity. The proposed technique estimates uniquely all channel frequency responses needed in space-time coded OFDM systems using "comb-type" training symbols. The computational complexity of the proposed technique is reduced dramatically, compared with the previous minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) technique, due to the all the processing being done in the frequency-domain. Also, several other techniques for mitigating the random noise effect and tracking channel variation are discussed to further improve the performance of the proposed approach. The performances of the proposed approach are demonstrated by computer simulation for mobile wireless channels.

A two-dimensional pilot-symbol aided (2-D PSA) channel estimation technique for coherent orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with transmitter diversity is proposed. The 2-D PSA channel estimator and the corresponding orthogonality condition of the set of pilot symbols are derived under minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion for OFDM systems with transmitter diversity. The proposed estimator is shown to be accurate and effective for tracking variations of channels between multiple transmitter antennas and receiver antennas.
