Robust model-based fault diagnosis for air handling units

The increasing adoption of remote laboratories in education along with the shift from eLearning 2.0 towards eLearning 3.0, have demanded several considerations in their implementation and delivery format. In response to these needs, this contribution introduces a novel model, Laboratory as a Service (LaaS), for developing remote laboratories as independent component modules and implementing them as a set of loosely-coupled services to be consumed with a high level of abstraction and virtualization. LaaS aims to tackle the common concurrent challenges in remote laboratories developing and implementation such as inter-institutional sharing, interoperability with other heterogeneous systems, coupling with heterogeneous services and learning objects, difficulty of developing, and standardization. Beyond the academic context, LaaS will facilitate the incorporation of remote laboratories in the ecosystem of the ubiquitous smart things surrounding us, which increases everyday with the approaching Web of Things (WoT) and artificial intelligence era. This, in turn, will create a breeding ground for online control, experimentation, and discovery—in either formal or informal context and with neither temporal nor geographical constraints.

Laboratory as a Service (LaaS): a Novel Paradigm for Developing and Implementing Modular Remote Laboratories

It is apparent that implementation of practical sessions in engineering education paves the way for students to be familiar with instruments and, thus, with the industrial real world. In recent decades, the high cost and administration burdens of physical equipment have caused a significant decline in experimentation within engineering education. This situation has fostered the development and adoption of remote laboratories as a replacement. Recently, remote laboratories based on a large variety of technologies have been developed at multiple universities and adopted in industrial electronics engineering education. Furthermore, some of these laboratories are replicated at many universities. This was the commencement of a new mainstream that advocates a better remodeling of those laboratories to allow their allocation, sharing among universities, and their interoperable communication with other heterogeneous educational systems, e.g., learning management systems (LMSs). This article, on the one hand, reports on the design of the state-of-the-art remote laboratories for industrial electronics disciplines along with the cutting-edge technologies adopted. On the other hand, the article sheds light on the outstanding interoperable educational remote laboratories architectures, classifying them with regard to their exclusive features and provided services, and pointing out the limitations of each.

Laboratory as a Service (LaaS): A model for developing and implementing remote laboratories as modular components

Until now, advanced model-based control techniques have been predominantly employed to control problems that are relatively straightforward to model. Many systems with complex dynamics or containing sophisticated sensing and actuation elements can be controlled if the corresponding mathematical models are available, even if there is uncertainty in this information. Consequently, the application of model-based control strategies has flourished in numerous areas, including industrial applications [1]-[3].

Human-in-the-Loop Model Predictive Control of an Irrigation Canal [Applications of Control]

This paper proposes a fault diagnosis approach for detection and diagnosis of parametric faults in linear dynamical systems. It is assumed that the system is modeled by an auto-regressive (ARX) model, and a recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm with variable forgetting factor is used for online parameter identification. The fault detection task is done using a statistical principal component analysis (PCA) method applied to ARX parameters. The fault isolation is done using an influence matrix method. The proposed methodology is applied to a simulation model of a DC motor under closed-loop control, and the performance is discussed.

Diagnosis of Parametric Faults Based on Identification and Statistical Methods

In this paper, a new architecture for remote laboratories based on REST (Representational State Transfer) web services is proposed. The proposed platform use languages such as HTML, AJAX (asynchronous Javascript and XML) and Labview. A web browser is the client interface and on the server side runs an application based on Labview 8.6 with REST web resources. The main contributions are: a) the proposed architecture; b) a “thin client“ based on a browser requiring a low bandwidth. Experimental tests, using an analog process simulator, were done and the obtained results show a good performance.

Design of Adaptive PCA Controllers for SISO Systems

Modeling human operator's behavior as a controller in a closed-loop control system finds applications in different areas such as training of operators by expert operator's model, tele-operation or developing warning systems for drivers. In this paper, first, an experimental setup has been developed for collecting data from human operators as they controlled a process with a DC motor, using the mouse interface on the Matlab environment. Low-order ARX models are proposed for human operator modeling. Replacing the operator by a stand-alone human controller model was one of the validation methods. Experimental results are shown to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach for human low-order modeling.
