Objectives Despite the growing pieces of evidence linking hyperuricemia with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease, the relationship between dyslipidemia and serum uric acid has not yet been established. This study aimed to investigate the association between individual components of dyslipidemia and serum uric acid by using the nationally representative Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016–2017. Methods A total of 8,722 participants (age ≥ 19 years) without missing values were analyzed for this study. Serum uric acid levels according to the presence of individual dyslipidemia components were calculated using multivariable-adjusted general linear models (GLM). Odds ratios of individual dyslipidemia components to hyperuricemia were calculated using unadjusted and multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 1,061 participants were identified as having hyperuricemia, with a prevalence of 12.2%. Multivariable-adjusted GLM demonstrated a significant trend between individual dyslipidemia components and serum uric acid levels (P < 0.05). A positive association between the numbers of dyslipidemia components and the increments of serum uric acid levels was also observed (P < 0.001). In multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis, odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of all dyslipidemia components to hyperuricemia were shown to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). When further adjusted for the combined components themselves, each 10 mg/dL increments of total cholesterol (OR 1.053; 95% CI 1.028–1.079), triglycerides (OR 1.017; 95% CI 1.009–1.026) and HDL-C (OR 0.804; 95% CI 0.729–0.887), retained significant correlation with hyperuricemia. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that the dyslipidemia components of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C levels are positively associated with serum uric acid levels, whereas serum HDL-C levels are inversely related. Further complementary studies regarding other lipid parameters are needed to confirm the accurate association between dyslipidemia and serum uric acid levels.

Association between dyslipidemia and serum uric acid levels in Korean adults: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2017.

Risk factors for the development of hyperuricemia: A STROBE-compliant cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

Aims/introduction To compare the association of hypertension plus hyperuricemia with four insulin resistance surrogates, including glucose and triglycerides (TyG index), TyG index with body mass index (TyG-BMI), the ratio of triglycerides divided by high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR). Materials and methods Data from a cross-sectional epidemiological study enrolling a representative population sample aged ≥65 years were used to calculate the four indexes. The association with hypertension plus hyperuricemia and insulin resistance surrogates was examined with multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic. Results A total of 4,352 participants were included, including 93 (2.1%) patients with hyperuricemia alone, 2,875 (66.1%) with hypertension alone and 587 (13.5%) with hypertension plus hyperuricemia. Mutivariate logistic regression showed that TyG index, TyG-BMI, TG/HDL-C and METS-IR were all significantly correlated with hyperuricemia, hypertension and hypertension plus hyperuricemia. Compared with the lowest quartile, the odds ratios (OR) of the highest quartile of the four indicators for hypertension plus hyperuricemia were TyG index: OR 6.39 (95% confidence interval [CI] 4.17-9.78); TyG-BMI: OR 8.54 (95% CI 5.58-13.09); TG/HDL-C: OR 7.21 (95% CI 4.72-11.01); METS-IR: OR 9.30 (95% CI 6.00-14.43), respectively. TyG-BMI and METS-IR had moderate discriminative abilities for hypertension plus hyperuricemia and the AUC values were 0.72 (95% CI 0.70-0.74) and 0.73 (95% CI 0.70-0.75). Conclusions The present study suggested that TyG index, TyG-BMI, TG/HDL-C and METS-IR had a significant correlation with hypertension plus hyperuricemia, and TyG-BMI and METS-IR had discriminative abilities for hypertension plus hyperuricemia.

Insulin resistance surrogates predict hypertension plus hyperuricemia.

Previous studies revealed that high serum uric acid (SUA) levels correlated with increased triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio. However, evidence is lacking regarding whether TG/HDL-C is an independent risk factor or just a simple marker of hyperuricemia. We aimed to investigate the relationship between TG/HDL-C and the risk of hyperuricemia in Chinese population. This retrospective cohort study involved 15,198 subjects (43.14 ± 13.13 years, 54.9% men) who were free of hyperuricemia at baseline. The association between TG/HDL-C and the risk of hyperuricemia, in the total sample and stratified by subgroups, was examined by multiple logistic regression analyses. During 4 years follow-up, hyperuricemia occurred in 2365 (15.6%) participants. The cumulative incidence of hyperuricemia was significantly elevated with increasing TG/HDL-C quartiles (5.9, 10.8, 18.4, and 27.5%, respectively). After multivariate adjustment, the odds ratio for hyperuricemia in the highest compared with the lowest quartile of TG/HDL-C was 1.80 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.49, 2.18), and each SD increment of TG/HDL-C ratio caused a 10% additional risk for hyperuricemia. Moreover, subgroup analyses showed that the association between TG/HDL-C and the risk of hyperuricemia was more pronounced in women and normal-weight adults. The results were consistent when analyses were restricted to participants without metabolic syndrome. TG/HDL-C ratio was positively related to the risk of hyperuricemia in Chinese population, particularly in women and normal-weight individuals. These findings suggested the potential of TG/HDL-C ratio to serve as an independent risk indicator in the prevention of hyperuricemia.

Higher triglyceride level predicts hyperuricemia: A prospective study of 6-year follow-up.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that elevated serum uric acid concentration (SUA) is correlated with lipid profile in hypertensive or obese patients. However, the relationship between serum uric acid levels and lipid profile in non-obese late adolescent population was not examined before. In this study we decided to assess the potential relationship between SUA and lipid profile, according to gender in adolescents with HU. The study group comprises 607 Polish adolescents (474 males, 133 females) with HU. Retrospective analysis included demographic, clinical, and laboratory data. Lipid profile was assessed including total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol to HDL-C ratio (TC/HDL-C). In the examined group 187/607 (31 %) of teenagers were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Median BMI-Z-score was 1.11 Q1–Q3: (−0.02–2.03) and both females and males in the upper tertile of SUA had statistically significant higher BMI-Z-score. The males in the upper tertile of serum uric acid levels also had higher values of TG and lower of HDL-C. In females, we have not found significant differences in lipid profile. Multiple regression analyses indicated that male gender, BMI-Z-score, and presence of hypertension correlated significantly with serum uric acid concentration. In summary, the results of our study confirm higher prevalence of hyperuricemia in males when compared to females and a stronger association of HU with BMI-Z-score and lipid profile in male adolescents. Nevertheless, multiple regression does not confirm the independent association of SUA with lipid profile.
