Electric power distribution systems composed of power electronics converters are susceptible to instabilities under certain conditions. Small-signal impedance approaches to stability analysis are incapable of predicting large-signal stability properties. Herein, a practical and scalable genetic algorithm based procedure for the estimation of regions of asymptotic stability of power electronics systems is proposed. The procedure is demonstrated on six nonlinear models that range from 6 to 75 state variables. The models represent the dynamics of Naval power electronics-based system components and systems.

Estimating Regions of Asymptotic Stability of Power Electronics Systems Using Genetic Algorithms

Large transformers are electrically close to generators in an offshore power system. Energising such transformers causes significant inrush currents, which are sustained for several seconds. The voltage dip on the generator bus then initiates a response from the automatic voltage regulator (AVR). Using a numerical simulation, the lightly damped response of the AVR is shown to modify the inrush transient. Other on-line transformers can be sent into magnetic saturation. Site measurements confirm the features of the transient predicted by the simulation. The paper shows that a detailed model is required if the inrush current on an isolated offshore power system is to be correctly predicted.

Analysis of transformer inrush transients in offshore electrical systems

A general analytic approach is presented for input current harmonics in a pseudo 12-pulse 3-phase to 6-phase cycloconverter system. The results can be used to predict the existence or absence of a particular frequency component in the input current of such systems under both symmetrical and asymmetrical operating conditions. A quantitative relationship is established to estimate the amplitudes of the harmonics based on the analysis of a typical 6-pulse 3-phase to single-phase cycloconverter.

Immittance based methods are often used in the stability analysis of power electronics based systems. Because it is difficult and/or time consuming to develop average value models of some components, it is often desirable to extract immittance data from detailed simulations (simulations in which the switching of the power semiconductors is represented). Traditionally, this is accomplished by introducing a perturbation, extracting the fundamental component of the voltage and current waveforms at the perturbation frequency, from which the impedance at that frequency may be extracted using transform techniques. In this work, an alternate approach is suggested, which offers both reduced computational effort as well as increased accuracy.

A New Procedure for Calculating Immittance Characteristics Using Detailed Computer Simulations

This paper extends the concept of small signal models to the frequency domain and then presents a new method for isolated power system voltage stability analysis. An approximation for the voltage and reactive power relationship of the cycloconverter is proposed and verified by time domain simulation. Small signal models for various nonlinear, power system components including power electronic converters are derived, based upon which, the incremental network of the system is formed. The voltage stability indices of various buses, which are defined in the bus impedance matrix of the incremental network, can be calculated using the conventional factorisation method without the need to determine the matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The model and algorithm can also be used to predict the stiffness of the system with respect to voltage fluctuations during operation.
