In order to investigate the prevalence of nematode larvae with zoonotical importance in trairas (Hoplias malabaricus), necropsy exams were done 30 specimes from Santo Antonio do Leverger, Mato Grosso, Brazil. These fishes were collected during drought time and two different nematodes larvae were found - Contracaecum sp. and Eustrongylides sp. - presenting the following prevalence: Contracaecum sp., 73% and Eustrongylides sp., 33%.

A high prevalence (86.7%) of various species of nematodes was observed in the stomach of great cormorants living in Lake Biwa, Japan. There were varying numbers of adults belonging to two common genera, Eustrongylides Jagerskiold 1909 (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae) and Contracaecum Railliet & Henry 1912 (Nematoda: Anisakidae). The first included common adenophorean nematodes comprising a single species, Eustrongylides tubifex and the second comprised ascaroid nematodes that contained four named species: Contracaecum rudolphii Hartwich, 1964, Contracaecum microcephalum Yamaguti, 1961, Contracaecum multipapillatum Drasche, 1882 and Contracaecum chubutensis Garbin, 2008. After the prevalence and intensity of the infection had been noted, both types of nematodes were frequently observed to penetrate the mucosa and intrude into the wall of the glandular stomach, where they caused gross haemorrhage and ulceration. The Eustrongylides sp. was predominantly found in a nodular lesion of the proventricular wall, while Contracaecum spp. were observed either free in the lumen of the proventriculus or, on occasion, deeply penetrating its wall. Of the Contracaecum spp., C. rudolphii was the most prevalent. Grossly, large numbers of nematodes were present in infected stomachs (for C. rudolphii intensity was 1-34 and 3-57 nematodes in male birds and 1-21 and 1-32 in females; for C. microcephalum 1-2 and 1 in male birds and 1-2 in females; for C. multipapillatum 2 in male cormorants and no infection in females; for C. chubutensis 1-2 and 1 in male birds and 1-5 and 1 in females and for E. tubifex 1-5 nematodes in male birds and 2-8 in females). Ulcerative inflammation and hyperaemia were the most common pathological presentations, especially in areas that had been invaded by parasites. Microscopically, varying degrees of granulomatous inflammatory reactions were seen, in addition to degenerated nematodes which appeared to have deeply penetrated mucosal surfaces and were surrounded by fibrous connective tissues.

Pathogenicity of Clinostomum complanatum (Digenea: Clinostomidae) in piscivorous birds

The family Clinostomidae Luhe, 1901 contains 29 species allocated to seven genera, of which Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 is the most diverse, with c. 14 valid species. The diversity of Clinostomum has been assessed, combining morphological and molecular data. The genetic library for species in this genus has increased steadily, although there is little or no information for the other genera included in the family. Molecular phylogenetic relationships among the genera of clinostomids have not been assessed, and their classification is still based on morphological traits. The monotypic Ithyoclinostomum was described from a fish-eating bird in Brazil, and its metacercariae have been found in several locations in South America, parasitizing erythrinid freshwater fishes. We collected unusually large metacercariae from the body cavity of cichlids in several locations across Middle America. These metacercariae exhibited some resemblance to Ithyoclinostomum, although several differences prevent their inclusion in Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum, casting doubt on their taxonomic identification. The main objective of this paper was to characterize the metacercariae collected in cichlids using both morphology and molecular data from three molecular markers, and to assess the molecular phylogenetic relationships among the genera of Clinostomidae to establish the position of the newly generated sequences. We took a conservative position and tentatively placed the metacercariae as belonging to Ithyoclinostomum.

Morphological and molecular characterization of an enigmatic clinostomid trematode (Digenea: Clinostomidae) parasitic as metacercariae in the body cavity of freshwater fishes (Cichlidae) across Middle America.

The genus Eustrongylides includes nematodes known as the etiological agent of the "big red worm disease." The aim of this work was to identify Eustrongylides spp. larvae from fish and adults from great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) sampled at Lake Trasimeno, Italy, by morphological and molecular analysis. Histopathological description of the lesions in birds was also provided. We described adults of Eustrongylides excisus for the first time in Italy, and we also linked larval stages 3 and 4 to adults. The use of molecular tools combined with the traditional taxonomy will help the identification of the species, including species inquirendae. Moreover, molecular analysis can also help to investigate the role of intermediate and paratenic hosts, to deepen the knowledge about geographical distribution of the different Eustrongylides spp. and to define the zoonotic potential of E. excisus, which has not yet been identified as causal agent of human cases.

Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Larval and Adult Stages of Eustrongylides excisus (Nematoda: Dioctophymatoidea) with Histopathological Observations.

The prevalence of helminths recovered from 108 birds representing eight species of Ciconiiformes from the Brazilian west-central region are presented. The digeneans Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa, Clinostomum marginatum, Cotylotretus grandis, Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum, the nematodes Contracaecum multipapillatum, Desmidocercella ardeae, Eustrongylides ignotus, and the cestode Valipora mutabilis were identified. Contracaecum multipapillatum was the most prevalent species and E. ignotus the most pathogenic. Gross lesions due to infections with C. multipapillatum were characterized by ulcerative processes and hyperemia of the mucosa whereas those caused by E. ignotus consisted of perforations of the gastric mucosa and fibrotic tubular lesions in the gastric serosa. Histopathological examinations revealed necrosis and mixed leucocyte infiltrations and discrete compression of the mucosa in C. multipapillatum infections. Destruction of the mucosa and submucosa with the presence of fibrous capsules were observed in E. ignotus infections. Reports of accidental human infections, with severe clinical signs induced by these parasites, indicate the necessity of a proper evaluation of the pathogenicity of helminths of aquatic birds.
