Improving railway safety depends heavily on the reliability of railway turnouts. The realization of effective, reliable and continuous observations for the spatial analysis and evaluation of the technical condition of railway turnouts is one of the factors affecting safety in railway traffic. The mode and scope of monitoring changes in geometric parameters of railway turnouts with associated indicators needs improvement. The application of digital twins to railway turnouts requires the inclusion of fundamental data indicating their condition along with innovative monitoring of weather conditions. This paper presents an innovative solution for monitoring the status of temperature and other atmospheric conditions. A UbiBot WS1 WIFI wireless temperature logger was used, with an external DS18B20 temperature sensor integrated into an S49 (49E1)-type rail as Tszyn WS1 WIFI. Measurements were made between January and May (winter/spring) at fixed time intervals and at the same measurement point. The aim of the research is to present elements of a fundamental approach of applying digital twins to railway turnouts requiring the consideration and demonstration of rail temperature conditions as a component in the data acquisition of railway turnout condition data and other constituent atmospheric conditions through an innovative solution. The research showed that the presented innovative solution is an effective support for the application of digital twins to railway turnouts and ongoing surveying and diagnostic work of other elements of rail transport infrastructure. The applicability of the TgCWRII second temperature difference indicator in the monitoring of railway turnouts was also confirmed.

The Fundamental Approach of the Digital Twin Application in Railway Turnouts with Innovative Monitoring of Weather Conditions.

: Most European countries successfully solve the problem of national passenger transportation due to a significant increase in speed. Such measures are carried out both on existing railways through their modernization, and on specially built lines. Mass passenger transportation along the HSN has confirmed their extremely high reliability, safety, economic efficiency, ecological cleanness, and attractiveness for passengers. The creation of international networks based on the potentials of individual countries leads to the need for establishing the following operational and technical parameters of domestic high-speed railway lines, which would have operational compatibility with the Trans-European HSN. The interconnection between the volume of passenger traffic with the specified factors allows to predict promising passenger flow and evaluate the effectiveness in the organization of high-speed running in a particular direction. The economic integration of countries in the European Union allows increasing passenger flows on international travel. This circumstance leads to the problem solution in connecting national high-speed highways into a single European network.

Dynamic interaction of a freight car body and a three-piece bogie during axle load increase

In paper has been carried out to develop a load-bearing floor to increase the carrying capacity of the solid-body rail freight car. An analysis of the structures made it possible to formulate the hypothesis that the load-bearing floor of the solid-body rail freight car should have a different cross-sectional shape. As a result, the load-bearing floor of the solid-body rail freight car was proposed, making it possible to reduce the consumption of materials by 1 to 2%. The maximum equivalent stresses (according to Mises) of the proposed load-bearing floor of the solid-body rail freight car in static analysis are 210.7 MPa, which is less than the yield limit of simple carbon steel. The proposed technical solution allows one to increase the carrying capacity of the solid-body rail freight car by 1.4–1.7 tons. The proposed technical solutions for the future operating conditions of rail freight cars make it possible to reduce the number of units in a train by 1–2 units while maintaining the gross weight of the train.

Increasing the Carrying Capacity of the Solid-Body Rail Freight Car

For the first time, a theoretical dependence was obtained to determine the filler concentration of the composite tape. On the basis of this dependence, a composite tape with variable mechanical and tribological properties can be obtained. It is proposed that the composite tape is welded onto the cylindrical surface of the central bowl of the rail truck bolster. The bench tests made it possible to determine the degree of wear of the central bowl of the rail truck bolster by means of a welded composite tape. The wear value of the central bowl of the rail truck bolster with welded-on composite tapes is 0.15–0.18 mm per 10,000 km of a freight car’s mileage. The predicted service life of the central bowl of the rail truck bolster with a welded-on composite tape is 320-420 thousand km.

Determination of the Filler Concentration of the Composite Tape

The paper is presenting the procedure used for establishing the cause of the wagon derailment. To do this, the computer simulations and the computational software, developed in the Dnipro National University of Railway Transport (DIIT) were used. The level of longitudinal forces and the wagons dynamic performance have been evaluated using the mathematical models of longitudinal oscillations of a train and the spatial vibrations of wagons, in particular of tank wagons. As a result of modeling we obtained oscillograms of longitudinal forces in each inter-wagon connection, the dependence of the largest longitudinal forces on travel time and distance traveled, the distribution of the maximum longitudinal forces along the train length, the speed dependence on travel time and track coordinates. We also obtained the dynamic performance of wagons: the vertical dynamics coefficients of the axle-box and central suspension, the horizontal dynamics coefficients and the derailment stability coefficient. The influence of the movable load in the tank wagons and the characteristics of rail irregularities on the stability coefficient against wheel climbing onto the rail is also considered. The presented methodology was used to determine the cause of the tank wagon derailment in a non-homogenous freight train consisting of 50 wagon tanks on an existing track section of the Lithuanian railways. When simulating the train movement, it was assumed that the train was equipped with elastic-friction absorbing devices and air distributors, turned on to the average operation mode. As a result of numerical experiments, an assumption was made about the cause of the train derailment.
