Journal ArticleDOI

High-resolution 13C NMR studies of proanthocyanidin polymers (condensed tannins)

TL;DR: In this paper, high-resolution 13C NMR spectra of some proanthocyanidin polymers were presented, and the chemical shifts of selected resonances in these spectra were compared with those of structurally related monomers and oligomers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Proanthocyanidin polymers of fodder legumes

TL;DR: The number- and weight-average MW of the polymers have been determined and most legume tannins have an approximately normal distribution of MWs with M n values of 2000–4000.
Journal ArticleDOI

Condensed tannins: quinone methide intermediates in procyanidin synthesis

TL;DR: Comparisons of acid- and base-catalysed reactions of epicatechin-(4β)-phenyl sulphide and leucocyanidin show that condensations proceed more rapidly at alkaline than at acidic pH so the biosynthesis of condensed tannins may occur through a quinone methide rather than a carbocation intermediate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Condensed tannins: preferential substitution at the interflavanoid bond by sulphite ion

TL;DR: In this paper, the reaction of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) bark tannins with sodium hydrogen sulphite gave sodium epicatechin-(4β)-sulphonate (1) and sodium epicateschine(4β→ 8)-epicatechin (4β) sulphoneate (2) in high yield with only a minor amount of sodium 1-(3,4-dihydroxyphenys)-2-hydroxy-3-(2,4,6-trihexyphenyl)-prop
