The behavior of pervasive applications should depend not only on their internal state and user interactions but also on the context sensed during their execution. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based generic context management (GCoM) model. The GCoM model facilitates context reasoning by providing structure for contexts, rules and their semantics. Context and context semantics in GCoM model are represented using the upper and the lower level ontology. Rules are represented using ontology compatible rule languages. Even though ontology data has static nature, GCoM model is designed to be dynamic and reusable in multiple domains of pervasive applications where resource limitation is a key issue. Initial prototype of the use of the model is created and the result obtained is promising

A comprehensive approach to model and use context for adapting applications in pervasive environments

In this article we present a review of selected literature of context-aware pervasive computing while integrating theory and practice from various disciplines in order to construct a theoretical grounding and a technical follow-up path for our future research. This paper is not meant to provide an extensive review of the literature, but rather to integrate and extend fundamental and promising theoretical and technical aspects found in the literature. Our purpose is to use the constructed theory and practice in order to enable anywhere and anytime adaptive e-learning environments. We particularly elaborate on context, adaptivity, context-aware systems, ontologies and software development issues. Furthermore, we represent our view point for context-aware pervasive application development particularly based on higher abstraction where ontologies and semantic web activities, also web itself, are of crucial.

Context and Adaptivity in Pervasive Computing Environments: Links with Software Engineering and Ontological Engineering

In this work, we present a collaborative context-aware service platform based on hybrid context management model (enhanced CoCA). It performs reasoning and decisions based on context data, context semantics, and related rules and policies. Such data is organized into a hybrid context management model (HCoM). The platform also introduces a neighborhood collaboration mechanism to facilitate peer collaboration in order to share their resources. We have developed an initial prototype of the platform. Our preliminary test shows that the platform is a promising data independent development environment for pervasive context-aware applications and it possesses good standard of scalability.

CoCA: A Collaborative Context-Aware Service Platform for Pervasive Computing

With an increasing diversity of pervasive computing devices integrated in our surroundings and increasing mobility of both users and hardware, it is important for computer systems and applications to be context-aware. Lots of works have already been done in this direction on how to capture context data and how to carry it to the application. Among the remaining challenges are to create the intelligence to analyze the context information and deduce the meaning out of it, and to integrate it into applications. Our work focuses on these challenges by defining generic context storage and processing model and studying its impact on the application core. We propose a reusable context ontology model that is based on two levels: a generic level and a domain specific level. We also propose an adaptation strategy to guarantee the adaptation of applications to context. Our case study shows that our context model and application adaptation strategies provide promising service architecture
