The on-orbit performance of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) instrument and its radiometrically calibrated products
David Crisp,Harold R. Pollock,Robert Rosenberg,Lars Chapsky,Richard A. M. Lee,Fabiano Oyafuso,Christian Frankenberg,Christopher W. O'Dell,Carol J. Bruegge,Gary Doran,Annmarie Eldering,Brendan Fisher,Dejian Fu,Michael R. Gunson,Lukas Mandrake,Gregory B. Osterman,Florian M. Schwandner,Florian M. Schwandner,Kang Sun,T. Taylor,Paul O. Wennberg,Debra Wunch,Debra Wunch +22 more
TL;DR: The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) carries and points a three-channel imaging grating spectrometer designed to collect high-resolution, co-boresighted spectra of reflected sunlight within the molecular oxygen (O2) A-band at 0.765 microns and the carbon dioxide (CO2) bands at 1.61 and 2.06 microns.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2: first 18 months of science data products
Annmarie Eldering,Christopher W. O'Dell,Paul O. Wennberg,David Crisp,Michael R. Gunson,Camille Viatte,Charles C. Avis,Amy Braverman,Rebecca Castano,Albert Y. Chang,Lars Chapsky,Cecilia Cheng,B. J. Connor,Lan Dang,Gary Doran,Brendan Fisher,Christian Frankenberg,Dejian Fu,Robert Granat,Jonathan Hobbs,Richard A. M. Lee,Lukas Mandrake,James McDuffie,Charles E. Miller,Vicky Myers,Vijay Natraj,Denis O'Brien,Gregory B. Osterman,Fabiano Oyafuso,Vivienne H. Payne,Harold R. Pollock,Igor Polonsky,Coleen M. Roehl,Robert Rosenberg,Florian M. Schwandner,Mike Smyth,Vivian Tang,Thomas E. Taylor,Cathy To,Debra Wunch,Debra Wunch,Jan Yoshimizu +41 more
TL;DR: The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) is the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) satellite designed to measure atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) with the accuracy, resolution, and coverage needed to quantify CO2 fluxes (sources and sinks) on regional scales as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preflight Spectral Calibration of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2
Richard A. M. Lee,Christopher W. O'Dell,Debra Wunch,Coleen M. Roehl,Gregory B. Osterman,Jean-Francois Blavier,Robert Rosenberg,Lars Chapsky,Christian Frankenberg,Sarah L. Hunyadi-Lay,Brendan Fisher,David M. Rider,David Crisp,Randy Pollock +13 more
TL;DR: Specific changes to the OCO-2 instrument and calibration process, compared to the original OCO, include stray-light protection; improved laser setup; increased spectral sampling; enhanced data screening, and incremental improvements in the ILS, dispersion, and FTS optimization analyses.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Cross-Calibration of Spectral Radiances and Cross-Validation of CO2 Estimates from GOSAT and OCO-2
Fumie Kataoka,David Crisp,Thomas E. Taylor,Christopher W. O'Dell,Akihiko Kuze,Kei Shiomi,Hiroshi Suto,Carol J. Bruegge,Florian M. Schwandner,Robert Rosenberg,Lars Chapsky,Richard A. M. Lee +11 more
TL;DR: To demonstrate the effectiveness of satellite remote sensing for CO2 monitoring, the GOSAT and OCO-2 teams have worked together pre- and post-launch to cross-calibrate the instruments and cross-validate their retrieval algorithms and products.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stability Assessment of OCO-2 Radiometric Calibration Using Aqua MODIS as a Reference
Shanshan Yu,Robert Rosenberg,Carol J. Bruegge,Lars Chapsky,Dejian Fu,Richard A. M. Lee,Thomas E. Taylor,Heather Q. Cronk,Christopher W. O'Dell,Amit Angal,Xiaoxiong Xiong,David Crisp,Annmarie Eldering +12 more
TL;DR: This methodology is able to quantify a drift of −0.8 ± 0.1% per year and capture a small error in correcting the aging of the solar calibrator as well as trending the OCO-2 Build 8R radiometric calibration.
