Estimation and Inference in Econometrics

It comes as something ofa surprise to reflect that the New York Review ofBooks is now over twenty years old. Even people of my generation (that is, old enough to remember the revolutionary 196os but not young enough to have taken a very exciting part in them) think of the paper as eternally youthful. In fact, it has gone through years of relatively quiet life, yet, as always in a competitive journalistic market, it is the controversies that attract the interest of the reader and to which the history (especially an admittedly impressionistic survey that tries to include something of the intellectual context in which a journal has operated) must give some attention. Not all the attacks which the New York Review has attracted, both early in its career and more recently, are worth more than a brief summary. What do we now make, for example, of Richard Kostelanetz's forthright accusation that 'The New York Review was from its origins destined to publicize Random House's (and especially [Jason] Epstein's) books and writers'?1 Well, simply that, even if the statistics bear out the charge (and Kostelanetz provides some suggestive evidence to support it, at least with respect to some early issues), there is nothing surprising in a market economy about a publisher trying to push his books through the pages of a journal edited by his friends. What makes organizations so similar? We contend that the engine of rationalization and bureaucratization has moved from the competitive marketplace to the state and the professions. Once a set of organizations emerges as a field, a paradox arises: rational actors make their organizations increasingly similar as they try to change them. We describe three isomorphic processes-coercive, mimetic, and normative—leading to this outcome. We then specify hypotheses about the impact of resource centralization and dependency, goal ambiguity and technical uncertainty, and professionalization and structuration on isomorphic change. Finally, we suggest implications for theories of organizations and social change.

The theory of precautionary saving is shown in this paper to be isomorphic to the Arrow-Pratt theory of risk aversion, making possible the application of a large body of knowledge about risk aversion to precautionary saving, and more generally, to the theory of optimal choice under risk In particular, a measure of the strength of precautionary saving motive analogous to the Arrow-Pratt measure of risk aversion is used to establish a number of new propositions about precautionary saving, and to give a new interpretation of the Oreze-Modigliani substitution effect

Precautionary Saving in the Small and in the Large

Building on the Acs-Szerb Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index (GEDI) methodology this paper aims to show the public policy applicability of GEDI. GEDI is a complex measure of entrepreneurship involving three sub-indices, 14 pillars and 28 variables. By answering four research questions we present Hungary’s entrepreneurial profile, show the change of the entrepreneurship over the 2006-2010 time period, and identify the strengths and the weaknesses. Hungary is compared to three important country groups. GEDI is a useful tool for policy-oriented analysis. Unlike other research projects that provide rather general and uniform policy suggestions, GEDI offers individual country level, tailor-made policy recommendations. Based on the principle of the weakest link, we present an optimal policy mix for Hungary involving the eight weakest performing pillars to improve Hungary’s GEDI score.

A jelenseg a vallalkozasok eseteben a digitalis vallalkozas megjelenesevel jart. Kerdes, hogy a vallalkozasok hogyan talaljak meg a helyuket es szerepuket az uj viszonyok kozott. A nagyvallalatok mellett versenykepes helyzetbe johetnek a kihivasokra rugalmasan reagalni kepes KKV-k is. Kerdes az is, hogy az uj folyamatok milyen kormanyzati feladatok ele allitjak az egyes orszagokat. Annak erdekeben, hogy az uj korszakba valo belesimulas minel gordulekenyebben menjen vegbe nelkulozhetetlen a jelenlegi helyzet alapos ismerete. A szerzők vizsgalatukkal azt kivantak feltarni, vajon a hazai uj technologiai vallalkozasok mennyiben vannak felkeszulve az uj korszakra, amit az Ipar 4.0 hoz el szamukra. A szakertői velemenyek alapjan kirajzolodo kep ramutat a magyar digitalis vallalkozasi okoszisztema szűk keresztmetszeteire, amelyek jelenleg a hazai technologiai vallalkozasokat a negyedik ipari forradalom kihivasainak sikeres lekuzdeseben hatraltathatjak.

Summary: Unlike previous analyses that applied single activity related entrepreneurship measures like self-employment, business ownership ratio, or the GEM’s TEA rate, we use a complex entrepreneurship measure, the Global Entrepreneurship and Index (GEI) to examine the level of entrepreneurship in the V4 countries of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. GEI incorporates both individual and institutional factors of entrepreneurship in order to explain the role of entrepreneurship in economic development. The GEI, with its three sub-indexes and fourteen pillars, is a particularly suitable tool for examining the level, the components, and the configuration of the National System of Entrepreneurship. Investigating the V4 countries, we can see that the overall level of entrepreneurship in these countries fits to their level of economic development.
