Journal ArticleDOI
Proof-of-concept trial of an alpha7 nicotinic agonist in schizophrenia.
Ann Olincy,Josette G. Harris,Lynn Johnson,Vicki Pender,Susan Kongs,Diana Allensworth,Jamey Ellis,Gary O. Zerbe,Sherry Leonard,Karen E. Stevens,James O. Stevens,Laura F. Martin,Lawrence E. Adler,Ferenc Soti,William R. Kem,Robert Freedman +15 more
TL;DR: An alpha7 nicotinic agonist appears to have positive effects on neurocognition in persons with schizophrenia, and significant neurocognitive improvement was found on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status total scale score.
Journal ArticleDOI
Initial phase 2 trial of a nicotinic agonist in schizophrenia.
Robert Freedman,Ann Olincy,Robert W. Buchanan,Josette G. Harris,James M. Gold,Lynn Johnson,Diana Allensworth,Alejandrina Guzman-Bonilla,Bettye Clement,M. Patricia Ball,Jay Kutnick,Vicki Pender,Laura F. Martin,Karen E. Stevens,Brandie D. Wagner,Gary O. Zerbe,Ferenc Soti,William R. Kem +17 more
TL;DR: DMXB-A, a nicotinic agonist that activates alpha(7)-nicotinic receptors, improved clinical ratings of negative symptoms that are generally resistant to treatment with dopamine antagonist antipsychotic drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alpha-7 nicotinic receptor agonists: potential new candidates for the treatment of schizophrenia
TL;DR: Alpha-7 nicotinic receptor agonists appear to be reasonable candidates for the treatment of cognitive and perceptual disturbances in schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of nicotine on cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.
Josette G. Harris,Susan Kongs,Diana Allensworth,Laura F. Martin,Jason R. Tregellas,Bernadette Sullivan,Gary O. Zerbe,Robert Freedman,Robert Freedman +8 more
TL;DR: The effects of nicotine in schizophrenia do not extend to all areas of cognition, and effects on attention may be severely limited by tachyphylaxis, such that decremented performance occurs in smokers, while modest effects may be achieved in nonsmokers.
Book ChapterDOI
Schizophrenia and the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor.
Laura F. Martin,Robert Freedman +1 more
TL;DR: Evidence implicating the nicotinic cholinergic, and specifically, the alpha7 Nicotinic receptor system in the pathology of schizophrenia is reviewed to be viable candidates for the treatment of cognitive disturbances in schizophrenia.
