Four dual-task experiments required a speeded manual choice response to a tone in a close temporal proximity to a saccadic eye movement task. In Experiment 1, subjects made a saccade towards a single transient; in Experiment 2, a red and a green colour patch were presented to left and right, and the saccade was to which ever patch was the pre-specified target colour. There was some slowing of the eye movement, but neither task combination showed typical dual-task interference (the “psychological refractory effect”). However, more interference was observed when the direction of the saccade depended on whether a central colour patch was red or green, or when the saccade was directed towards the numerically higher of two large digits presented to the left and the right. Saccadic eye movements and dual-task interference

We compared 7 methods of measuring visual fatigue--accommodation power, visual acuity, pupil diameter, critical fusion frequency (CFF), eye movement velocity, subjective rating of visual fatigue, and task performance--for their sensitivity to visual load. In the experiment, 10 participants performed a monitoring task at 2 viewing distances, read articles under 2 levels of screen contrast, and tracked visual targets at 2 different speeds. The same measurement techniques, excluding pupil diameter and eye movement velocity, were compared by extending the task time from 20 to 60 min with the same VDT tasks to test for possible improvement in sensitivity. The results indicated that sensitivities of accommodation power, visual acuity, and CFF were greatly improved by a longer task period, but these 3 measurement techniques did not distinguish among tasks. Pupil diameter, eye movement velocity, and subjective rating of visual fatigue were sensitive in differentiating tracking from reading and monitoring tasks. Eye movement velocity and subjective rating were sensitive to the changes in target velocity of the tracking task. Although task performance was not directly comparable to other measurement techniques, it helped to ensure that participants maintained the same performance level by devoting more resources to the high-load conditions. Actual or potential applications of this research include using some of these assessment techniques for the design of adaptive displays.

A Comparison of Seven Visual Fatigue Assessment Techniques In Three Data-Acquisition VDT Tasks:

The steady-state accommodative responses of emmetropes and late-onset myopes was measured for an array of numbers located at -1, -3 and -5 dioptres using an objective infra-red optometer. Responses were compared for passive (reading numbers) and active (adding numbers) conditions. For the passive condition, the late-onset myopes showed a significantly lower accommodative response than the emmetropic group. No significant differences were found between the two groups for the active condition. Ocular biometric characteristics were also measured in emmetropes, late-onset myopes and early-onset myopes using keratometry and ultrasonography. No significant differences in corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth and crystalline lens thickness were found between the groups. Late-onset myopes exhibited significantly deeper vitreous chambers than emmetropes, which more than accounted for the difference in refractive error between the two refractive groups. We conclude that, while significant differences exist in the accommodative responses of late-onset myopes and emmetropes, late-onset myopia is due predominantly to elongation of the vitreous chamber.

Steady-state accommodation and ocular biometry in late-onset myopia

The effect of a concurrent auditory task on visual search was investigated using an image-flicker technique. Participants were undergraduate university students with normal or corrected-to-normal vision who searched for changes in images of driving scenes that involved either driving-related (e.g., traffic light) or driving-unrelated (e.g., mailbox) scene elements. The results indicated that response times were significantly slower if the search was accompanied by a concurrent auditory task. In addition, slower overall responses to scenes involving driving-unrelated changes suggest that the underlying process affected by the concurrent auditory task is strategic in nature. These results were interpreted in terms of their implications for using a cellular telephone while driving. Actual or potential applications of this research include the development of safer in-vehicle communication devices.

Effect of a Concurrent Auditory Task on Visual Search Performance in a Driving-Related Image-Flicker Task

Orienting to a target by looking and pointing is examined for parallels between the control of the two systems and interactions due to movement of the eyes and limb to the same target. Parallels appear early in orienting and may be due to common processing of spatial information for the ocular and manual systems. The eyes and limb both have shorter response latency to central visual and peripheral auditory targets. Each movement also has shorter latency and duration when the target presentation is short enough (200 msec) that no analysis of feedback of the target position is possible during the movement. Interactions appear at many stages of information processing for movement. Latency of ocular movement is much longer when the subject also points, and the eye and limb movement latencies are highly correlated for orienting to auditory targets. Orienting to Targets by Looking and Pointing: Parallels and Interactions in Ocular and Manual Performance:

Two experiments were conducted to examine possible decrements in performance over time on two visual tracking tasks. In Experiment 1, six subjects tracked a horizontal, sinusoidally moving target in the picture plane for 6.5 min. In Experiment 2, six subjects tracked a target sinusoidally changing focus in the depth plane between 0 and 4 D over 6.5 min. Results indicated a linearly decreasing amplitude of both pursuit eye movements (.29 deg of visual angle per minute) and accommodation (.11 D/min). These visual fatigue effects are discussed in the context of several competing explanations.

Ten adult male subjects participated in an experiment in which they simultaneously visually tracked a jumpwise moving target and identified randomly generated auditory dots and dashes. Results indicated there was both an elimination of discrete saccades and a shortening of eye movement paths. It was also observed that the difficulty of the visual tracking task and the concurrent auditory task showed effects that were not independent of each other. Results could be construed to support both a divided attention and an opponent-process visual processing model.

Saccadic eye movements during a concurrent auditory task

A two-part experiment was performed using 10 naive adult male subjects to determine the effects of a concurrent auditory dot/dash identification task on pursuit eye movements. Results indicated there was a significant (20 percent) but transitory task-induced restriction of the range of both an 18 deg horizontal and a 14 deg vertical pursuit eye movement visual angle. Furthermore, doubling the presentation rate of the concurrent task accounted for an additional 5 percent restriction of pursuit eye movement range. Results also indicated that the eye movement range is unaffected by both prior knowledge of the task and four consecutive practice trials. It is suggested that both the rapidity of target movement and the presence of concurrent mental tasks could significantly shrink an operator's pursuit eye movement ranges during viewing of dynamic visual displays such as airborne low-level television and forward-looking infrared.
