Agriculture can contribute to the conservation of high-diversity systems, which may provide important ecosystem services such as pollination and biological control via complementarity and sampling effects. Land-use management is often focused on few species and local processes, but in dynamic, agricultural landscapes, only a diversity of insurance species may guarantee resilience (the capacity to reorganize after disturbance). Interacting species experience their surrounding landscape at different spatial scales, which influences trophic interactions. Structurally complex landscapes enhance local diversity in agroecosystems, which may compensate for local high-intensity management. Organisms with high-dispersal abilities appear to drive these biodiversity patterns and ecosystem services, because of their recolonization ability and larger resources experienced. Agri-environment schemes (incentives for farmers to benefit the environment) need to broaden their perspective and to take the different responses to schemes in simple (high impact) and complex (low impact) agricultural landscapes into account. In simple landscapes, local allocation of habitat is more important than in complex landscapes, which are in total at risk. However, little knowledge of the relative importance of local and landscape management for biodiversity and its relation to ecosystem services make reliable recommendations difficult.

REVIEWS AND SYNTHESES Landscape perspectives on agricultural intensification and biodiversity - ecosystem service management

Food webs in nature have multiple, reticulate connections between a diversity of consumers and resources. Such complexity affects web dynamics: it first spreads the direct effects of consumption and productivity throughout the web rather than focusing them at particular "trophic levels." Second, consumer densities are often donor controlled with food from across the trophic spectrum, the herbivore and detrital channels, other habitats, life-history omnivory, and even trophic mutualism. Although consumers usually do not affect these resources, increased numbers often allow consumers to depress other resources to levels lower than if donor-controlled resources were absent. We propose that such donor-controlled and "multichannel" omnivory is a general feature of consumer control and central to food web dynamics. Food Web Complexity and Community Dynamics

The tolerance of plants to herbivory reflects the degree to which a plant can regrow and reproduce after damage from herbivores. Autoecological factors, as well as the influence of competitors and mutualists, affect the level of plant tolerance. Recent work indicates that there is a heritable basis for tolerance and that it can evolve in natural plant populations. Although tolerance is probably not a strict alternative to plant resistance, there could be inter- and intraspecific tradeoffs between these defensive strategies.

The ecology and evolution of plant tolerance to herbivory.

Theoretical developments are helping us to comprehend the basic parameters governing the dynamics of the interactions between generalist predators and their many pest and nonpest prey. In practice, however, inter- and intraspecific interactions between generalist predators, and between the predators and their prey, within multispecies systems under the influence of rapidly changing biotic and abiotic variables are difficult to predict. We discuss trade-offs between the relative merits of specialists and generalists that allow both to be effective, and often complementary, under different circumstances. A review of manipulative field studies showed that in approximately 75% of cases, generalist predators, whether single species or species assemblages, reduced pest numbers significantly. Techniques for manipulating predator numbers to enhance pest control at different scales are discussed. We now need to find ways of disentangling the factors influencing positive and negative interactions within natural enemy communities in order to optimize beneficial synergies leading to pest control.

Can generalist predators be effective biocontrol agents

We evaluated the influence of intraguild predation among generalist insect predators on the suppression of an herbivore, the aphid Aphis gossypii, to test the appropriateness of the simple three trophic level model proposed by Hairston, Smith, and Slobodkin (1960). We manipulated components of the predator community, including three hemipteran predators and larvae of the predatory green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea, in field enclosure/exclosure experiments to address four questions: (1) Do generalist hemipteran predators feed on C. carnea? (2) Does intraguild predation (IGP) represent a substantial source of mortality for C. carnea? (3) Do predator species act in an independent, additive manner, or do significant interactions occur? (4) Can the experimental addition of some predators result in increased densities of aphids through a trophic cascade effect? Direct observations of predation in the field demonstrated that several generalist predators consume C. carnea and other carnivorous arthropods. Severely reduced survivorship of lacewing larvae in the presence of other predators showed that IGP was a major source of mortality. Decreased survival of lacewing larvae was primarily a result of predation rather than competition. IGP created significant interactions between the influences of lacewings and either Zelus renardii or Nabis predators on aphid population suppression. Despite the fact that the trophic web was too complex to delineate distinct trophic levels within the predatory arthropod community, some trophic links were sufficiently strong to produce cascades from higher-order carnivores to the level of herbivore population dynamics: experimental addition of either Z. renardii or Nabis predators generated sufficient lacewing larval mortality in one experiment to release aphid populations from regulation by lacewing predators. We conclude that intraguild predation in this system is wide-spread and has potentially important influences on the population dynamics of a key herbivore.

Influence of intraguild predation among generalist insect predators on the suppression of an herbivore population.

Crop plant compensation for herbivory and the population dynamics of herbivores are two key elements in defining an herbivore's pest status. We studied the dynamics of natural, unmanipulated populations of the aphid Aphis gossypii on seedling plantings of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense, over a 4-year period in California's Central Valley. Aphid populations colonized all plantings, but reached densities in excess of 0.5 aphids/leaf during only one year (1991), when outbreaks occurred. Outbreak populations were, however, ephemeral; predation and parasitism suppressed aphid populations prior to the initiation of flower bud production, when cotton plant growth may become photosynthate-limited. Effective natural biological control was observed despite the action of hyperparasitoids and the heavy mortality of immature parasitoids that occurred when predators consumed parasitized aphids.



We conducted manipulative experiments during 1991 and 1992 to quantify the ability of pre-reproductive G. hirsutum to compensate for aphid herbivory. In 1991 aphid populations in the high-damage treatment reached densities as high as any observed naturally during the past 37 years. Damage symptoms were severe: leaf area was reduced by up to 58% and total above-ground plant biomass was reduced by 45%. By the time of crop harvest, however, plants had compensated fully for the early damage in each of the three traits that define cotton's economic value: the timing of crop maturation, the yield of cotton fiber, and the quality of cotton fiber. Aphid feeding damage did, however, produce some changes in plant architecture that persisted throughout the growing season, including a decrease in the number of vegetative branches. In 1992 aphid populations and associated damage were much lighter, but the qualitative responses to herbivory were consistent with those observed in 1991. Plant compensation for early damage was complete for economically significant measures, and vegetative branch production was again suppressed in mature cotton plants. There was no evidence for a change in the suitability of G. hirsutum as a host plant for A. gossypii as a result of early damage (‘induced resistance’).



We conclude that pre-reproductive G. hirsutum, which has not yet begun strong allocations to reproductive structures or established architectural complexity, has retained effective means of compensating for herbivory. In contrast to other systems exhibiting strong compensation, G. hirsutum appears to compensate in part by enhancing apical dominance. The recognition of early-season A. gossypii as non-pests is critical to the sustainability of cotton production, because it will allow growers to forego pesticide applications that accelerate the evolution of pesticide-resistance and disrupt natural communities of predators and parasitoids.
