Nanofluids are potential heat transfer fluids with enhanced thermophysical properties and heat transfer performance can be applied in many devices for better performances (i.e. energy, heat transfer and other performances). In this paper, a comprehensive literature on the applications and challenges of nanofluids have been compiled and reviewed. Latest up to date literatures on the applications and challenges in terms of PhD and Master thesis, journal articles, conference proceedings, reports and web materials have been reviewed and reported. Recent researches have indicated that substitution of conventional coolants by nanofluids appears promising. Specific application of nanofluids in engine cooling, solar water heating, cooling of electronics, cooling of transformer oil, improving diesel generator efficiency, cooling of heat exchanging devices, improving heat transfer efficiency of chillers, domestic refrigerator-freezers, cooling in machining, in nuclear reactor and defense and space have been reviewed and presented. Authors also critically analyzed some of the applications and identified research gaps for further research. Moreover, challenges and future directions of applications of nanofluids have been reviewed and presented in this paper. Based on results available in the literatures, it has been found nanofluids have a much higher and strongly temperature-dependent thermal conductivity at very low particle concentrations than conventional fluids. This can be considered as one of the key parameters for enhanced performances for many of the applications of nanofluids. Because of its superior thermal performances, latest up to date literatures on this property have been summarized and presented in this paper as well. However, few barriers and challenges that have been identified in this review must be addressed carefully before it can be fully implemented in the industrial applications.

A review of nanofluid stability properties and characterization in stationary conditions

This article reports on the International Nanofluid Property Benchmark Exercise, or INPBE, in which the thermal conductivity of identical samples of colloidally stable dispersions of nanoparticles or “nanofluids,” was measured by over 30 organizations worldwide, using a variety of experimental approaches, including the transient hot wire method, steady-state methods, and optical methods. The nanofluids tested in the exercise were comprised of aqueous and nonaqueous basefluids, metal and metal oxide particles, near-spherical and elongated particles, at low and high particle concentrations. The data analysis reveals that the data from most organizations lie within a relatively narrow band (±10% or less) about the sample average with only few outliers. The thermal conductivity of the nanofluids was found to increase with particle concentration and aspect ratio, as expected from classical theory. There are (small) systematic differences in the absolute values of the nanofluid thermal conductivity among the various experimental approaches; however, such differences tend to disappear when the data are normalized to the measured thermal conductivity of the basefluid. The effective medium theory developed for dispersed particles by Maxwell in 1881 and recently generalized by Nan et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 81, 6692 (1997)], was found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, suggesting that no anomalous enhancement of thermal conductivity was achieved in the nanofluids tested in this exercise.

A Benchmark Study on the Thermal Conductivity of Nanofluids

The purpose of this review summarizes the important published articles on the enhancement of the convection heat transfer in heat exchangers using nanofluids on two topics. The first section focuses on presenting the theoretical and experimental results for the effective thermal conductivity, viscosity and the Nusselt number reported by several authors. The second section concentrates on application of nanofluids in various types of heat exchangers: plate heat exchangers, shell and tube heat exchangers, compact heat exchangers and double pipe heat exchangers.

Application of nanofluids in heat exchangers: A review

A colloidal mixture of nano-sized particles in a base fluid, called nanofluids, tremendously enhances the heat transfer characteristics of the original fluid, and is ideally suited for practical applications due to its marvelous characteristics. This article addresses the unique features of nanofluids, such as enhancement of heat transfer, improvement in thermal conductivity, increase in surface volume ratio, Brownian motion, thermophoresis, etc. In addition, the article summarizes the recent research in experimental and theoretical studies on forced and free convective heat transfer in nanofluids, their thermo-physical properties and their applications, and identifies the challenges and opportunities for future research.

Enhancement of heat transfer using nanofluids—An overview

This article presents an experimental investigation where the thermal conductivity and viscosity of silver-deionized water nanofluid is measured and studied. The mixture consists of silver nanoparticles of 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9% of volume concentrations and studied for temperatures between 50°C and 90°C. The transient hot-wire apparatus and Cannon-Fenske viscometer are used to measure the thermal conductivity and kinematic viscosity of nanofluid, respectively. The thermal conductivity increases with the increase in temperature and particle concentrations. A minimum and maximum enhancement of 27% at 0.3 vol% and 80% at 0.9 vol% are observed at an average temperature of 70°C. The viscosity decreases with the increase in temperature and increases with the increase in particle concentrations. Heat transfer characteristics of silver/water nanofluids in a shell and tube heat exchanger

This article presents the measurement of thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids experimentally. Silver nanoparticles dispersed in water with volume concentrations of 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.2 vol% are used in the present study. A transient hot-wire apparatus is used for measuring the thermal conductivity of nanofluids and a Cannon-Fenske viscometer is used to measure the kinematic viscosity of nanofluids. The data are collected for temperatures ranging from 50 to 90°C. The results have shown an increase in the measured thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids as the particle concentrations increase, and the values are higher than the values of the base liquids. The minimum enhancement of 27% for 0.3 vol% and a maximum enhancement of 115% for 1.2 vol% are observed at an average temperature of 70°C when compared with pure water for the same temperature.
