Project Management: A Systems Approach To Planning, Scheduling and Controlling (Book)

The original edition of this book summarized more than a decade of work on communications flow in science and engineering organizations, showing how human and organizational systems could be restructured to bring about improved productivity and better person-to-person contact. While many studies have been done since then, few of them invalidate the general conclusions and recommendations Allen offers. In a new preface he points out new developments, noting areas that need some modification, elaboration, or extension, and directing readers to the appropriate journal articles where the findings, are reported. The first three chapters provide an overview of the communication system in technology, present the author's research methods, and describe differences in the career paths and goals of engineers and scientists that cause special problems for organizations. The book then discusses how technological information is acquired by the R & D organization, shows how critical technical communication within the laboratory is for R & D performance, and originates the idea of the \"gatekeeper,\" the person who links his or her organization to the world at large. Concluding chapters take up the influence of formal and informal organization and of architecture and office layouts on communication. Many of these ideas have been successfully incorporated by architects and managers in the design of new R & D facilities and complexes. Purpose:	
The purpose is to predict customer loyalty by utilising big data. This will be done by combining two models: The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) and the Net Promoter Score (NPS) using the benefits of each model, the cause and effect relationship in ACSI and the simple survey methodology in NPS. 

The findings are aimed to facilitate a work method enabling companies to use big data in order to predict customer loyalty to be able to pro-actively work with detracting customers and to grow future profits. 

Method:	
The methodology had both a quantitative and qualitative approach. By deducting a model from a theoretical analysis a linear relationship was derived between ACSI and NPS. The drivers of loyalty was then developed from a qualitative analysis and tested through a quantitative analysis of the relationships in the model. 

Findings:	
A relationship between the NPS and the ACSI was possible to prove. However, it was not possible to predict customer loyalty since the drivers of loyalty could not be explained with the available data and further research is therefore needed.

Project management and its effects on project success: Cross-country and cross-industry comparisons

The main goal of this paper is to establish a relation between the project management organization for a company and its manufacture strategy. Another objective is also to verify whether there is an alignment between the configuration of the organizational structure and the model of the manufacture strategy for a company. The methodological approach used was the multiple cases analysis conducted in three companies of the cosmetics, electronic, and airspace sectors. The main results point to more complex project management structures in the process along the continuum between volume and variety. Keywords: Project management. Manufacture strategy. The world today works with projects. This could be demonstrated by the number of companies adopting the project management methodology (Kerzner, 2000). Project management is the ability to coordinate activities with the main purpose to satisfy the stakeholders' expectations. To create capabilities in the formations of work teams became a main worry, as to manage different functions in different perspectives (Frame, 1994). Choosing the correct structure by companies will be decisive in the success of their projects. The organizational structures could appear in different forms: the functional, the pure project, and the matrix weak, balanced and strong (Slack et al., 1996; Verma, 1995; PMBok (2000). Choosing one structure impacts in the authority and in the projects command' hierarchy (Verzuh, 2000). The main purpose of this work is to identify criterions that will guide the choose of the project management organizational structure of one company, as well as make a parallel with the structures used in practical. Interviews were conducted with the responsible people for project management in Brazilian telecommunications companies. The analysis based on aspects related with the structures characteristics and competencies in project teams.

Porter (1996) argues that the strategy’s essence remains in choosing the activities to be made in a different way. The strategic planning could be defined as the process of creating and implementing decisions about the organization future (KERZNER, 2002). Another concept actually in use is the project management. Today is necessary a management strategy that uses the operational unities to carry out the work, check the efficiency and send information to the senior management. The project management methodology could do all this work and is the way chosed by many companies to manage their business critical aspects (CLELAND; IRELAND, 2000). King (1978) says that the projects can unify the strategies and spread them to the corporation areas. A well succeed project management requires the fulfillment of the lacuna between the company vision and the ongoing projects (DINSMORE, 1998). That’s the way the project structures such as functional, projectized and matrix and the PMO (Project Management Office), structure that applies the project management concept inside an organization, could help to change the company strategy into results through project management. The organizational structures models and configurations should be analyzed thinking about general and manufacture strategy’s configuration of an organization and your position in the volume-variety matrix (PORTER, 1979); (SLACK et al., 1996). Companies should try to organize themselves in a better way to project management, making the alignment to the project temporal characteristics and deciding how they will be structured to execute their projects. The selection of the correct structure by companies will be strategic in the success of the projects managed by them. When these projects are managed by huge companies, the risk of the projects turning not succeed, by a deficient organizational structure, is too high. And the financial impact will be proportional to the project size. So, to this research, the methodological option adopted was the multiple study cases, selecting three companies from the following segments: cosmetics, electric-electronic and airspace. The main elements investigated in the field study were: categorization of the company, the strategical hole of the project management activity, the existed project management structure and the investments in activities related to project management. After the conduction of the interviews, an analysis was made relating the structure’s functions adopted in the practice by the studied companies, with the functions that, theoretically, were the more appropriated ones to the companies of each business segment, when the strategies would be implemented through a structure of these kinds.

Alinhamento estratégico de estrutura organizacional de projetos: uma análise de múltiplos casos.

The objective of this work is to investigate the relationship between the adoption of project management methodologies and the project’s success. The methodological approach includes a longitudinal field research conducted in 3 countries: Argentina, Brazil and Chile, during a period of 3 years, in just one organization with full access to the information. Data from 1387 projects were obtained. The results show a positive and significant influence of the variables training and number of PMPs (Project Management Profissionals) on the success of the projects and a positive influence of the project methodology used on the time results, indicating benefits to the analyzed organization.
