■ Abstract Fluid flow at the microscale exhibits unique phenomena that can be leveraged to fabricate devices and components capable of performing functions useful for biological studies. The physics of importance to microfluidics are reviewed. Common methods of fabricating microfluidic devices and systems are described. Components, including valves, mixers, and pumps, capable of controlling fluid flow by utilizing the physics of the microscale are presented. Techniques for sensing flow characteristics are described and examples of devices and systems that perform bioanalysis are presented. The focus of this review is microscale phenomena and the use of the physics of the scale to create devices and systems that provide functionality useful to the life sciences.

Physics and applications of microfluidics in biology.

This review reports the progress on the recent development of micromixers. The review first presents the different micromixer types and designs. Micromixers in this review are categorized as passive micromixers and active micromixers. Due to the simple fabrication technology and the easy implementation in a complex microfluidic system, passive micromixers will be the focus of this review. Next, the review discusses the operation points of the micromixers based on characteristic dimensionless numbers such as Reynolds number Re, Peclet number Pe, and in dynamic cases the Strouhal number St. The fabrication technologies for different mixer types are also analysed. Quantification techniques for evaluation of the performance of micromixers are discussed. Finally, the review addresses typical applications of micromixers.

Micromixers—a review on passive and active mixing principles

Magnetic forces are now being utilised in an amazing variety of microfluidic applications. Magnetohydrodynamic flow has been applied to the pumping of fluids through microchannels. Magnetic materials such as ferrofluids or magnetically doped PDMS have been used as valves. Magnetic microparticles have been employed for mixing of fluid streams. Magnetic particles have also been used as solid supports for bioreactions in microchannels. Trapping and transport of single cells are being investigated and recently, advances have been made towards the detection of magnetic material on-chip. The aim of this review is to introduce and discuss the various developments within the field of magnetism and microfluidics.

Magnetism and microfluidics

We report the development of a micromachined magnetic-bar micromixer for microscale fluid mixing in biological laboratory-on-a-chip applications. The mixer design is inspired by large scale magnetic bar mixers. A rotating magnetic field causes a single magnetic bar or an array of them to rotate rapidly within a fluid environment. A fabrication process of the magnetic bar mixer is developed. Results of fluid mixing in micro channels and chambers are investigated using experimental means and computer-aided fluid simulation.

We present a novel active micro stirrer and its arrays for micro total analysis systems. These mixers are capable of rapid and on-demand mixing. Fabrication of the microstirrers is described. The mixing efficiency is investigated using experimental means and computer-aided fluid simulation.

A novel microstirrer and arrays for microfluidic mixing

Patterning of semiconductor polymers is pertinent to preparing and applying organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). In this study, coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing (high resolution, high speed, and convenient) was used to pattern polymer semiconductors. The influence of the key printing parameters on the width of polymer sub-microwires was evaluated. The width decreased with increasing applied voltage, printing speed, and concentration of the polymer ink. However, the width increased gradually with increasing polymer ink flow rate. A regression analysis model of the relationship between the printing parameters and width was established. Based on a regression analysis/genetic algorithm, the optimal printing parameters were obtained and the correctness of the printing parameters was verified. The optimized printing parameters stabilized the width of the arrays to ca. 110 nm and imparted a smooth morphology. Additionally, the corresponding OFETs exhibited a high mobility of 2 cm2 V-1 s-1, which is 5× higher than that of thin-film-based OFETs. One can conveniently obtain high-performance OFETs from ordered sub-microwire arrays fabricated by CFEJ printing.
