Recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) have low quality when compared with natural or conventional aggregates as the paste adhering to it is the key aspect that affects its functionality. Since the adhering cementitious paste weakens the adhesion between the aggregate and the binder, it becomes a decisive factor in the mechanical behavior of the asphalt mixture. It turns out that enhancing the surface of the aggregate or eliminating the paste attached to the NA (natural aggregate) is crucial for improving interfacial bonding. Therefore, the treatment and evaluation of the RCAs by laboratory testing method were studied in this research to assess their reuse in the asphalt pavement surface coarse layer. With the various techniques for removing paste from the RCA, a combination of three enhancement processes were developed for the effective removal of the cement paste, which are mechanical, chemical, and 400 °C conditioning thermal treatment. The RCAs were first charged in a Los Angeles machine for the mechanical treatment to remove parts of the attached cement. Then they were soaked in two types of acids, namely hydrochloric and sulfuric, with different concentrations to determine the most effective or optimum molarity for about a 48 h soaking duration. Then a 2 h thermal treatment was conducted on the RCA samples. After all the treatments were done, the RCA aggregates were subjected to different types of tests to examine their properties in order to ensure their full potential in terms of their physical, chemical, mineralogical, and surface microstructure characteristics. Based on the experiment design, the study intends to examine the quality of the treated recycled aggregates generated by the combination approach as well as to investigate the optimal acid concentration and type. The results show that the proposed mechanochemical and thermal treatment reinforced the quality of the RCAs when compared to the non-treated samples. Meanwhile, HCl proved to be the optimum compared to H2SO4 in most examinations of the properties. In the end, better chemical qualities were validated, and the RCA qualities were improved.

Durability of Recycled Concrete Aggregates Prepared with Mechanochemical and Thermal Treatment

Fiber can absorb asphalt binder and therefore reinforce and stabilize the asphalt mixture structure and also prevent the asphalt from the leaking, which occurs in the process of mixing and transport. In this study, three kinds of fiber (polyester fiber, polypropylene fiber, and lignin fiber) are used to evaluate the relationship between the fiber types and mechanic performance of SMA-13 fiber asphalt mixture, which is specially designed for field tests of high-speed vehicles on pavements. The micro-surface characteristics of fiber and aggregates were studied by SEM and image analysis. Marshall stability and splitting strength were used to measure the properties of the asphalt mixture. In addition, a field test, including measures for curve-section edge, curve-section center, straight-section edge, and straight-section center, was conducted to evaluate the skid resistance of the high-speed vehicles that test field pavement. The results show that the Marshall stabilities of asphalt mixture with three kinds of fibers have been improved, whereas the stability of asphalt mixture prepared by polypropylene fiber and polyester fiber particularly increased before immersion. Among the three kinds of fiber asphalt mixtures, the polyester fiber asphalt mixture has enhanced water susceptibility. Skid resistance in the field test indicated that high skid resistance and good surface-texture depth were achieved.

Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Mixture Design on Anti-Skid Surfacing for Field Testing High-Speed Vehicles on Pavements

Unbound permeable aggregate base (UPAB) materials with strong load-transmitting skeleton yet adequate inter-connected pores are desired for use in the sponge-city initiative. However, the micro-scale fabric evolution and instability mechanism of macroscopic strength behavior of such UPAB materials still remain unclear. In this study, virtual monotonic triaxial compression tests were conducted by using the discrete element method (DEM) modeling approach on specimens with different gradations quantified by the parameter of gravel-to-sand ratio (G/S). The realistic aggregate particle shape and inter-particle contact behavior were properly considered in the DEM model. The micromechanical mechanisms of the shearing failure of such UPAB materials and their evolution characteristics with G/S values were disclosed from contact force chains, microstructures, and particle motion. It was found that the proportion of rotating particles in the specimens decreased and the proportion of relative sliding between particles increased as the content of fine particles decreased. The plastic yielding of the specimens originated from the failure of contact force chains and the occurrence of the relative motion between particles, while the final instability was manifested by the large-scale relative motion among particles along the failure plane (i.e., changes in the internal particle topology). By comparing the macroscopic strength, microstructure evolution, and particle motion characteristics of the specimens with different G/S values, it was found that the specimens with G/S value of 1.8 performed the best, and that the G/S value of 1.8 could be regarded as the threshold for separating floating dense and skeletal gap type packing structures. The variation of Euler angles of rotating particles was significantly reduced in the particle size range of 4.75 mm to 9.50 mm, indicating that this size range separates most of the particles from rolling and sliding. Since particle rolling and sliding behavior are directly related to shear strength, this validates the rationality of the parameter G/S for controlling and optimizing gradations from the perspective of particle movement. The findings could provide theoretical basis and technical guidance for the effective design and efficient utilization of UPAB materials.

Discrete Element Modeling of Instability Mechanisms of Unbound Permeable Aggregate Base Materials in Triaxial Compression

Rapid texture depth detection method considering pavement deformation calibration

Digital image processing is commonly used in civil engineering to measure aggregate morphologies. However, it has limitations due to laying style and acquisition method, restricting analysis to two-dimensional geometric features. To overcome this, a new laser scanning-based method is proposed to reconstruct three-dimensional features of coarse aggregates. Three-dimensional morphology indexes are developed, with promising results. This method effectively captures complete surface information and the ratios between axes, surface area rate, and volume rate describe shape, texture, and angularity well. The proposed methodology accurately characterizes coarse aggregate morphologies, aiding asphalt mixture design. Incorporating the developed indexes enables effective quality control of asphalt pavements.
