This chapter introduces the finite element method (FEM) as a tool for solution of classical electromagnetic problems. Although we discuss the main points in the application of the finite element method to electromagnetic design, including formulation and implementation, those who seek deeper understanding of the finite element method should consult some of the works listed in the bibliography section.

A literature study for DEA applied to energy and environment

Today, organizations that wish to carry on the sustainable growing need a robust strategic performance measurement and evaluation system because of changing demands of consumers, reduced product life cycle, competitive and globalised markets. In this study, a new methodology is introduced and proposed for increasing the supplier selection and evaluation quality. The new approach considers both qualitative and quantitative variables in evaluating performance for selection of suppliers based on efficiency and effectiveness in one of the biggest car manufacturing factory in Turkey. This new methodology is realized in two steps. In the first stage, qualitative performance evaluation is performed by using fuzzy AHP (Analytical Hierarchical Process) in finding criteria weights and then fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) is utilized in finding the ranking of suppliers. So, qualitative variables are transformed into a quantitative variable for using in DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) methodology as an output called quality management system audit. In the second stage, DEA is performed with one dummy input and four output variables, namely, quality management system audit, warranty cost ratio, defect ratio, quality management. As a result, comparing with the present system applied by the car factory, the new method seems to be some advantages and superiorities for making the decision in buying the quality car luggage side part (panel) by selecting the suitable supplier(s) in an automotive factory of Turkey.

MACBETH (Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique) is a multicriteria decision analysis approach that requires only qualitative judgements about differences of value to help an individual or a group quantify the relative attractiveness of options. We present an up-to-date survey of the mathematical foundations of MACBETH. Reference is also made to real-world applications and an extensive bibliography, spanning back to the early 1990’s, is provided.

ISYDS- Integrated System for Decision Support (SIAD - Sistema Integrado de Apoio a Decisão): a software package for data envelopment analysis model

This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of Brazilian air carriers. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach is used to determine the efficiency of each airline company, comparing its outputs with available inputs. Scale of operation is taken into account. The aim is to measure each companys performance, comparing its relative efficiency to all others included in the group under investigation. It is possible to evaluate each carrier efficiency over the years (1998, 1999 and 2000), assuming that the same company is a different one in different years. Both efficiency index and targets choice are performed. The proposed approach, that uses a Multiobjective-DEA problem, allows choosing targets belonging to the feasible set of efficient companies.

The aim of this paper is to use DEA models to evaluate sustainability in agriculture. Several variables are taken into account and the resulting efficiency is measured by comparison. The performance of family farms is analysed here (variables: farmed area, work force, and production). As agricultural sustainability depends on the maintenance of systems of production for long periods of time, the models were run for the years of 1986 and 2002. Tiered DEA models were used to group farmers in sustainability categories. Non-parametric regression models were used to identify the factors affecting the efficiency measurements. All the results indicate that the majority of the farmers increased their efficiency along the time. These improvements may support the existence of sustainability.

One of the main issues in DEA modeling is the variables choice. This may have conflictive objectives, like increasing the mean efficiency or maximizing the model ranking capability - a DEA classic fragility. In this paper, we compare four variable selection methods, focused on DMUs sorting. These methods are applied to a real situation of assessing the efficiency of third-party logistics in the activity of newspaper home delivery, in Rio de Janeiro.
