In the last two decades, the fibre reinforced composites have attracted substantial importance as a potential structural material for residential housing construction and is largely found in nonstructural housing components. Research and development efforts are being made to use bast fibres (comes under the classification of plant fibres) as reinforcement for the automotive and building industries. Bast fibres, a relatively new group of environmental friendly materials are in considerable demand in recent years by unifying technological, economical and ecological aspects. Bast fibres are receiving increasing attention as reinforcement in polymeric materials in composites due to the shortage and environmental hazardous of non-renewable resources. The use of bast fibres offer a number of advantages, since they are derived from a renewable resource, require low energy inputs in their manufacture, and can be disposed of at the end of their life-cycle by composting. Further the bast fibre reinforced polymer composites is of low density and cost as well as having satisfactory mechanical properties. The aim of this paper is to provide a consolidated report of the researches in the field of different bast fibres (banana, flax, hemp, jute, kenaf and ramie) reinforced polymer composite including the effect of chemical treatment with its physico-mechanical properties and their applications.

The bonding between CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) laminate and steel plays a key role in the strengthening effects of CFRPs on a steel structure. In this paper, the toughness of the adhesives and the bonding thickness were investigated on the CFRP-steel bond performance using a single lap shear test. The properties of the adhesives, brittle (linear elastic) or tough (nonlinear elastic, lower modulus, higher elongation), led to apparent differences in the ultimate load, stiffness, the shape of the bond-slip curve, and the stress distribution of the CFRP-steel bond. For the tough adhesive, an increase of the bonding thickness from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm improves the fracture energy but reduces the interface stiffness. On the contrary, for the brittle adhesive, the effects of the bonding thickness are negligible. According to the test and literature results, key parameters of the bond-slip models of the tough adhesive and brittle adhesive in the case of the delamination of CFRP laminate were determined.

Effects of adhesive property and thickness on the bond performance between carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminate and steel

In the present paper, ramie fiber reinforced polymer (RFRP) plates prepared by hot compression process were subjected to water immersion at 20 oC and 40 oC for four weeks, and the variation of water uptake and mechanical properties with immersion time were investigated. It was found that the saturated water content and the coefficient of diffusion in RFRP were much higher than those in synthetic fiber based composites, due to the strong hydrophilic characteristic of the ramie fiber. After fully drying of the immersed samples, mass loss from 1.6 % to 3.6 % was found, indicating occurrence of a serious hydrolysis of the resin and the ramie fibers. After a short term of immersion (i.e., 1 day), RFRP showed a remarkable deterioration in the flexural and short beam shear properties. Further increase of the immersion time, the degradation rate of the mechanical properties was much reduced. After fully drying, the mechanical properties of the samples can be recovered to some extent, but still much less than the original values. The variation of mechanical property as a function of the water uptake content exhibits three stages (i.e., dramatic reduction, leveling off and quick decrease again). This may be due to the sequent occurrence of the degradation of natural fibers, fiber debonding and hydrolysis of the fiber and resin during immersion.
