Culture and Imperialism

To raise the question of the nature of narrative is to invite reflection on the very nature of culture and, possibly, even on the nature of humanity itself. So natural is the impulse to narrate, so inevitable is the form of narrative for any report of the way things really happened, that narrativity could appear problematical only in a culture in which it was absent-absent or, as in some domains of contemporary Western intellectual and artistic culture, programmatically refused. As a panglobal fact of culture, narrative and narration are less problems than simply data. As the late (and already profoundly missed) Roland Barthes remarked, narrative "is simply there like life itself. . international, transhistorical, transcultural."' Far from being a problem, then, narrative might well be considered a solution to a problem of general human concern, namely, the problem of how to translate knowing into telling,2 the problem of fashioning human experience into a form assimilable to structures of meaning that are generally human rather than culture-specific. We may not be able fully to comprehend specific thought patterns of another culture, but we have relatively less difficulty understanding a story coming from another culture, however exotic that

Over the last few years, we have discovered that the fact that a married couple?consisting of a literary theorist and a physician?was writing a book?about opera?has elicited not a little curiosity and even a bit of dismay (mostly, we must admit, from family and friends). We were never sure which was considered more bizarre: the collaborative "concord" of apparent disciplinary "contraries" (to borrow Ben Jonson's terms)1 or our choice of research area: the social and cultural construction of disease and sexuality in nineteenthand twentieth-century opera.2 Having met early in high school, we had already known each other for about thirty years when this project began. We had been married for over twenty of them. To be frank, we thought we knew each other quite well. So much for those comfortable certainties upon which everyday life depends. We were cer? tainly aware that we had been differently trained: medical school and post? graduate work in respiratory physiology would obviously turn out a differ? ent kind of mind than would a Ph.D. program in Comparative Literature. We were even aware that we thought and worked in what we then consid? ered "somewhat" different ways. But we hadn't counted on the extent or the force of what the French so rightly call "deformation prof ess ionnelle." Since we both had some musical training and opera had always been a shared love and even passion, we began our research assuming we would bring to it the different and varied skills of interpretation and analysis that both personality and education had developed. Then one day we worked together, side by side, in the library. Much to our surprise, we discovered that we read in different ways and at different speeds, recording different things and in different manners. Trained to read and remember every line, the physician worked with painstaking care and deliberate attention; he recorded each point made, in sequential and logi? cal order, taking detailed notes. The literary theorist, on the other hand, given the kind of broad-based research projects she had undertaken in the past, was accustomed to reading through large amounts of scholarly mate? rial in order to find and, only then, to zero in on relevant material; there-
