As technology is increasingly being seen as a facilitator to learning, open remote laboratories are increasingly available and in widespread use around the world. They provide some advantages over traditional hands-on labs or simulations. This paper presents the results of integrating the open remote laboratory VISIR into several courses, in various contexts and using various methodologies. These integrations, all related to higher education engineering, were designed by teachers with different perspectives to achieve a range of learning outcomes. The degree to which these VISIR-related outcomes were accomplished is discussed. The results reflect the levels of student engagement and learning and of teacher involvement. From the analysis, a connection between these two aspects was traced, although only related to the user profiles. VISIR is shown to be always of benefit for more motivated students, but this benefit can be maximized under particular conditions and characteristics.

How Remote Labs Impact on Course Outcomes: Various Practices Using VISIR

The design and implementation of Networked Control System Laboratory (NCSLab) 3-D which is a web-based 3-D control laboratory for remote real-time experimentation are introduced in this paper. NCSLab 3-D is built based on the NCSLab framework which supports the structure that the test rigs are located diversely in different parts of the world. In NCSLab 3-D, the test rigs are cataloged into several sublaboratories according to their functionalities. The laboratory building, sublaboratories, and test rigs are modeled in 3-D and reconstructed in a web-based interface using Flash 3-D engines. Users can “walk into” these laboratories and pick up the test rigs in a virtual reality environment similar to what they do in hands-on laboratories. During the remote experiments, the 3-D models are synchronized with the real test rigs through the network data links. Users are able to zoom in, zoom out, and rotate the 3-D models freely. Therefore, the real-time experiments can be watched from any angles. NCSLab 3-D has been applied to the control engineering education in Wuhan University, China. The results of the teaching practice show that NCSLab 3-D are able to bring great convenience to both users and maintenance personnel and improve the efficiency of the laboratory equipment significantly.

Tele-operated Laboratory Experiments in Engineering Education: The Uniaxial Tensile Test for Material Characterization in Forming Technology

This paper discusses aspects of Information and Communications Technologies and how they have influenced our daily lives, especially our educational models. Despite the technological advances, the lack of interest of young people for science and technology careers increases and it is even more worsened by the fact that an extremely small number of schools have science and computer labs in Brazil. Moreover, some educational models have emerged in last decades contributing to teaching and learning process, and we discuss especially those which include remote experimentation and 3D virtual worlds, whose goal is to provide immersive learning environment with real experiments for students.

Remote experiments and 3D virtual world in education

Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) and particularly its Single Point (SPIF) variant has been studied intensively over the last years given the potential for low-cost prototyping and small batches production. Numerical and experimental works have been covering a widespan of materials and geometries. This paper fills an important gap regarding studies of the SPIF process applied to brass alloys, and particularly the commonly used Cu-35Zn brass alloy. Despite being a material widely used in industry for centuries, with excellent cold formability and innumerous applications, there is still no relevant information on the mechanical response and properties of this material under SPIF. This research is based in SPIF experiments with brass alloy sheets with different thicknesses (0.50, 0.70 and 1.00 mm), to obtain data such as forming forces or forming fracture lines to be compared against standard forming limit diagrams or against other materials under ISF. Other data like friction during the process was evaluated as well. Fifteen sets of experiments were conducted, using different values of step down (0.10, 0.50 and 1.00 mm) and two forming tools with diameters 10 and 15 mm.

Virtual 3D Worlds and Remote Experimentation: A Methodology Proposal Applied to Engieering Students

One of the difficulties present in the engineering teaching is the lack of practice and interaction with the phenomena in study. The use of remote experiment can aid in this learning process reducing difficulties and shortcomings related to the lack experimentation and interaction with phenomenon that occur in traditional classes. This paper reports on the use of a remote experiment used for students learning about material elastic properties (Hook's Law). The experiment in this paper is composed of: a helical spring coupled to a didactic press, a Raspberry Pi controller, a local server and a Website for accessing educational content and controlling the experiment. The learning environment also allows access through mobile devices. During the experiment, charts and parameter tables are displayed on the screen. These data are sourceof informationfor students calculating and analyzing the phenomenon observed, relating theory to practice.

Using remote experimentation for study on engineering concepts through a didactic press

This article discusses the preliminary studies of the Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) process applied brass alloy Cu-35Zn, with different sheet thicknesses and formed geometries. Despite being a material widely used in industry, with excellent cold formability, there is still no relevant research on this material concerning SPIF. As a result of these preliminary studies, the necessary forces (F) during the process, the true strain (e1, e2) and maximum wall angle (ψ) supported by materials are presented and discussed.

SPIF of brass alloys: Preliminary studies

This paper presents an overview of important control variables for the correct operation of a wind turbine. Typically turbines are installed in hard to reach places and not rely on the presence of a traditional power grid. Aiming to maximize the lifetime of these devices, it is important to have control of variables that can cause problems in the operation. The temperature must be monitored, as when it is above normal can result in melting of the coating pieces. Very low temperatures can cause freezing of moving parts. The rotor speed should be controlled to avoid heating due to friction of rotating parts and avoid breakage of the blades by the wind. Resumo: Entre as funcoes administrativas e operacionais, as mais relevantes de uma industria de conformacao de placas de revestimentos cerâmicos com processo continuo, sao a producao e a manutencao ja que, em conjunto, tem que entregar os produtos ou servicos no tempo indicado, com a qualidade solicitada e a quantidade projetada. Constituiu-se entao um trabalho de levantamento bibliografico, pesquisa, observacao, analise e interpretacao dos fatos coletados, que sao aplicados nestas industrias com casos tipicos de processos continuos de producao, para descrever um caso de agregacao de informacoes, unificando assim tecnicas para fornecer consistencia na pratica de gestao da manutencao com a hipotese de que pela aplicacao da manutencao preditiva de maneira eficiente nos setores destas empresas, estas caminharao para o alcance dos objetivos estrategicos e, estar assim, melhor preparadas para lidar com os constantes desafios de um mercado competitivo e dar um passo importante no avanco na busca pela excelencia.
