System and method for communicating information relating to a network resource

Prefetches to a cache memory subsystem are made from predictions which are based on access patterns stored by context. An access pattern is generated from prior accesses of a data processing system processing in a like context. During a training sequence, an actual trace of memory accesses is processed to generate unit patterns which serve in making future predictions and to identify statistics such as pattern accuracy for each unit pattern. In a replacement list, prefetched objects are included at the head of the list. Within a prefetch, objects are listed by order of expected time of access, with alternatives at predicted times of access. When an object is used, it is moved to the head of the list and any prefetched alternatives to that object, indicated by like time marks, are moved to the tail of the list. Alternatives may be listed according to degree of match of a current access pattern and a stored access pattern and by prior accuracy of the unit pattern. A server includes a demand access queue which preempts fetches of objects identified by a prefetch queue.

Predictive cache system

A method and system are provided for prefetching information in a processing system. A first memory has multiple first locations. At least one of the first locations stores information including an address of a different first location, the different first location having been referenced in the first memory after a previous reference to the one first location. A second memory has at least one second location storing information from the one first location, including the address. Information is prefetched to the second memory from the address of the first memory, in response to a reference to the second location.

System and method for prefetching information in a processing system

A document retrieval system having improved response time. During the time the user spends viewing the displayed information, other information that the user is likely to read or study later is preloaded into memory. If the user later requests the preloaded information, it can be written to the display very quickly. As a result, the user's request to view new information can be serviced quickly.

System and method for information retrieval employing a preloading procedure

A two-level cache memory system for use in a computer system including two primary cache memories, one for storing instructions and one for storing data. The system also includes a secondary cache memory for storing both instructions and data. The primary and secondary caches each employ their own separate tag directory. The primary caches use a virtual addressing scheme employing both virtual tags and virtual addresses. The secondary cache employs a hybrid addressing scheme which uses virtual tags and partial physical addresses. The primary and secondary caches operate in parallel unless the larger and slower secondary cache is busy performing a previous operation. Only if a "miss" is encountered in both the primary and secondary caches does the system processor access the main memory.

Two-level cache memory system

A computer memory management method for cache memory (10) uses a deconfirmation technique to provide a simple sequential prefetching algorithm. Access sequentiality is predicted based on simple histories. Each memory line in cache memory is associated with a bit in an S-vector (20), which is called the S-bit for the line. When the S-bit is on, sequentiality is predicted meaning that the sequentially next line is regarded as a good candidate for prefetching, if that line is not already in the cache memory. The key to the operation of the memory management method is the manipulation (turning on and off) the S-bits.
